@moritheil:

Shinji really is not a likeable or even relateable to character (over long exposure anyway). I believe this was purposefully done by Anno, he wanted us to NOT like the protagonist, to be angry and annoyed with him and fed up with his whining- while at the same time wanting to see him succeed. Which is a tough thing to do, to make your audience really not like a character but want to see them be successful in the end.

Renton is much more of your standard "boy must save the world with his robot and get the girl" protagonist. He is likeable, he's relateable, he does some very admirable things, and he does some stupid things too. He feels down sometimes, but he realizes he can't just keep moping about feeling useless. I suppose it would have been more accurate of me to say that his character is similar to Shinji in regards to the situations he finds himself in, since that is what they mostly share in common. Personality wise, they are very very different.
---

@YotaruVegeta:

I typically am one of those haters :) I never really watched much of Eureka 7 on Cartoon Network, just saw some random clips here and there. I don't really remember the voice acting, it didn't stand out to me as being terrible so that's a good thing. I did however recently watch a series (Baccano!) which I actually much preferred the English dub over the original Japanese...which very rarely ever happens to me.

@phatbhuda:
I know what you mean :) I found it to be a really refreshing show.

I also drew the Renton-Shinji parallel. The thing is, Renton is far more likeable because at the start of the story he already wants out of his everyday life. He is therefore willing to adapt and overcome. Shinji, on the other hand, whines incessantly about things which are out of the ordinary, which make up 90% of the show. This generally doesn't endear him to people. (There are, of course, authorial reasons for Shinji's whining, but that doesn't make him more likeable.)
