After stops and starts in the past, X Japan is finally making the rounds on their full U.S. concert tour! They begin in L.A. and end up in NYC, don’t miss them if you can possibly help it! If you are in NYC for NYAF and NYCC you should add on this concert!

With a successful little tour last year, VAMPS are back for round two! They begin in L.A. and have a couple more concerts in California before heading to NYC. If you are in NYC for NYAF and NYCC you should add on this concert!

In the spirit of making big cons bigger (maybe to compete with SDCC, hum?) this year’s New York Anime Festival is paired with Comic Con for what is sure to be a busy and exciting weekend. Tales of Earthsea Opening

Since we, and possibly many others, missed the NYICFF screening of Tales of Earthsea from Studio Ghibli, we are lucky to be getting another chance. The film opens across the U.S. in select cities!

Miyavi Neo Tokyo Samurai Black World Tour

Popular and eccentric J-rocker Miyavi is taking a little tour through the U.S. It’s a pretty rare thing to get such artists outside of the coasts or without an attachment to a convention so take advantage! He’ll be in NYC on June 26.

The Center for Book Arts: Garo Manga (1943-1973) Exhibit

This is an exhibit highlighting the manga anthology Garo which was known for its experimental art and political commentary. It is being held at The Center for Book Arts in New York City and admission is free!

Japan Society: Graphic Heroes, Magic Monsters Exhibit

Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s prints are bright and evocative making it easy to see why he has influenced manga even though his work comes from more than 150 years prior. This is a great way to experience the history and culture of Japan while seeing how it remains present in the modern pop culture of the country.

Special Screening of Spirited Away

The NYICFF is showing Spirited Away on the big screen for two weekends at the IFC Center! If you didn’t have a chance to see this film in a theater is it well worth it.

A play about the lives and romances of workers at a manga cafe in Tokyo that highlights Japanese youth culture and the “the current socio-economic rifts in Japan that have widened the gap between generations.” Written by Toshiki Okada, translated by Aya Ogawa, directed by Dan Rothenberg. This sounds like a unique play!

American Museum of Natural History: Bollywood and Anime in America Exhibit

This is an exhibit highlighting how anime has integrated itself into American pop culture. There are screenings and talks, though there seems to be much more Bollywood related pieces. The exhibit is included with the regular price of the museum fee.

New York International Children’s Film Festival

The NYICFF holds a huge variety of animated and live action films every year among their discussions and workshops. It is a wonderful event not just to see anime but to experience animation from all over the world. But lucky for us this year they are premiering two stellar works: Summer Wars and Mai Mai Miracle. They are also showing Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror and the first installment of the ONA Time of Eve. If you’re in the area at all these screenings are atleast the must-sees!

Special Screening of Pom Poko

This less known Studio Ghibli work is being showing in lovely 35mm right here in NYC! Thanks to the Children’s Film Festival crew we are getting a rare treat. There are going to be showings at the IFC for just two days in December.

Osamu Tezuka Animation Retrospective

Thanks to the New York Children’s Film Festival who runs events all year round, we are getting a small retrospective of Osamu Tezuka’s animated works over Thanksgiving weekend. It is broken into two sections the first of which is Astro Boy and Kimba with the following session incorporating much lesser known works including Legend of the Forest. Should be an interesting and rare event to see this on film!

New York Anime Festival

We go another round with New York City’s big anime con! And can you believe it, YOSHIYUKI TOMINO! We are press again this year so look forward to extensive coverage. We will also be hosting our tried and true Anime Recruitment panel on Sunday from 4-5PM and we will be participating in the Bloggers Roundtable on Saturday from 8-9PM! The Bloggers Roundtable features people from: About.com, Ani-Gamers, Anime Almanac, Anime Vice, Comics Worth Reading, The Gaming Dungeon, Ogiue Maniax, Subatomic Brainfreeze, and us!

Eureka Seven Movie

For one night only the newly released Eureka Seven movie will be in theaters. Take advantage of this special event presented by Fathom. And if you are in NYC this movie will be a nice kick start to NYAF which starts the very next day! We will be there!

Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

Evangelion’s revamp is heading to DVD soon but before that you can try to catch a screening of the film in NYC! The Village East Cinema is showing the movie starting in September for a limited engagement. Since we’ve already seen it, we highly recommend it! Plus we might just see it again!

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea

The latest Ghibli film opens in American theaters across the country! Don’t miss the chance to see Ponyo by the most prestigious animation studio in Japan on the big screen! We will certainly be attending a screening in NYC.

It’s that time of year again! The summer in New York City holds so many events and this one is always a treat. Last year we had a chance to see Dororo but missed out on L Change the WorLd, but you know how that turned out! Anyway, there are many screenings ranging from all of Asian cinema. We will be checking out the first two 20th Century Boys movies on Sunday, June 21! You may also catch us at the the showing of Lalapipo, Be a Man! Samurai School, Cape No. 07, Snakes and Earrings, and Yoroi Samurai Zombie.

The prequel to the Death Note movies is hitting theaters all across the country! Though there has been some harsh criticism of it we are curious enough to see it ourselves. It is L after all! Look forward to our thoughts on it!

Gundam 30th Anniversary

That’s right, Gundam turns 30-years-old this year! In celebration we are reviewing the original series in the franchise, Gundam 0079, on Monday, April 6th. This is just in time for the upcoming announcement about a special Gundam project: Gundam Unicorn! Look forward to it! Ikkimasu!

The Shining Darkness

During the month of March we are taking a look at the films by director Makoto Shinkai. Even though he only made a splash in the anime scene in 2002 (though he released some shorts before that), he has quickly garnered much praise and attention for his unique storytelling. His continuous themes of love, separation, time, and space make his films delicate looks at the human heart. We will be looking at them in order: Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and 5cm Per Second.

The convention season starts early this year! It may be cold but nothing will stop us from attending New York City’s biggest geek convention! We won’t be running any panels so that gives us ample time to see and do it all and then tell you all about it. And we are press so that means we won’t miss out on a minute of the fun. Looks to be one heck of a convention, the weekend is going to be full! We will be running around but look for us!

We are reviewing every bit of Macross anime, I know we are insane. All of them, in order, counting down to the last episode of Macross Frontier (which last episode airs on September 24). We are almost sick of Macross…almost. The schedule is as follows: Macross + Macross 2012, Macross Do You Remember Love?, Macross II, Macross Plus, Macross 7 + Macross 7 Encore + Macross 7 The Galaxy is Calling Me!, Macross 7 Dynamite, Macross Zero, and then Macross Frontier.

Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Nunokawa has been the producer behind such hit shows as Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Naruto. He will be talking about his company, Pierrot, and what it has been like funding some of the biggest titles in anime. This will be held at Kinokuniya across from Bryant Park. Since we won’t be at Otakon (;_;) this sounds like a good opportunity to get some rare information.

Sword of the Stranger

We are seeing this anime film on the big screen at the Imaginasian Theater here in NYC! It starts on Friday, July 18 and I read it was only a one week engagement, but looking at their site I only see movie times through Tuesday so don’t miss out! Look forward to our review.
