All Points Bulletin: Sandy Wiped Out the Regularly Scheduled Title

November 4, 2012

If you have any suggestions for what to highlight on an APB drop us a line via email or Twitter.

Hisui’s picks:

  • I Sense a Disturbance in the Force
With all the mixture of nerd rage and jubilation you would expect it was announced that Disney bought the Star Wars franchise. If you remember what happened when Disney bought the Muppets and Marvel it was pretty much the same thing only with more Death Star jokes. The most interesting announcement from the whole deal was Star Wars: Episode VII being announced for 2015. With no real details beyond that I am cautiously interested in what that movie turns out to be.
  • Poetry in Motion
They should have sent a poet to review Utakoi. Actually they did. Ink from Ani-Gamers looks at the anime loosely based on the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu poems.
  • It Turns Out Akito the Exiled is the Cart Driver
Gundamn look at the Code Geass OVAs including the newest series that is set on the European front. And speaking of OVAs they also talk about the Patlabor OVA series based on the TV series as well.
  • JoJo Was a Man Who Thought Himself a Loner
Nick the Stampede & Soul Bro Ryu review the first episode of the new Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure anime.
  • Type-Moon News Round Up

Narutaki’s picks:

  • Anime on the Run
This lively Japanese music video sends a girl sprinting through a collection of art styles.
  • A Not-So-Happy Ending
The short that will included on the Brave DVD?BD release looks and sounds awesome! It is about that fateful encounter in the past alluded to in Brave.
  • Hark! A Hurricane
Kate Beaton had the bad luck of being in New York City for the storm, and in lower Manhattan no less. She decided to draw about it though which is a happy like bonus for us readers.

Where is my Euphemia li Britannia alternative universe spin-off series?

All Points Bulletin: The Sprawl of Westeros

Hisui’s picks:

Narutaki’s picks:

  • Not Just Another Princess Movie
This essay is brilliantly written and touches on every point of criticism (some warranted, most not) about Brave being predictable: “It’s a well-worn genre, the Spunky-Princess-Who-Doesn’t-Get-Married-(Or-Experience-Any-Attraction-To-Anyone)-And-Her-Mother story.”
  • Super Mario – World 9: Westeros
    Totally awesome.
  • Simple Rules for Asking Question at a Convention
Everyone of us can get flustered when asking a question to a guest at a convention, but here is a guide to help make the experience easier for yourself and everyone else involved. I know I’m a culprit of asking about older work when a panel was highlighting a new project.
  • OUYA May be JUST a Big Dream
This article is really good about laying down the facts about this ambitious project. It isn’t a project that I’m personally invested in, but I’ve been following its progress and am curious about the outcome.
  • Your Surreal Superhero Moment of the Week
Brought to you by this Golden Girls/Super Friends mash-up.

I sometimes just pick pictures that I know Narutaki will enjoy:

All Points Bulletin: Dinosaur Precure

Hisui’s picks:

Narutaki’s picks:

  • Extend the Hand of Gender Equality to Bronies
This is a great little article about how many of us praise women for not falling in line with what is socially accepted as “girl stuff” but still can’t do the same for guys. It brings up good points and I don’t even like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic!
  • Invent Techniques to Make Your Movie Better
This has been a long standard for Disney and now Pixar is part of that tradition too with their animation. This video is about how Pixar used new sound techniques to really bring Brave to life.
  • Jurassic Park 4 Could be Good?
Well, maybe if they pay attention to this list from TOR about ways to make sure it doesn’t suck. We all love the first movie, I have amazing fond memories of seeing it in the theater, but the sequels have been terrible and that’s putting it nicely. After reading this list, I’m cautiously looking forward to the newest installment, at least until more news is released about it.
  • Spend the Year with Hark! A Vagrant
Kate Beaton is releasing 2013 calenders! They will be available at San Diego Comic-Con first but will eventually be released online, too.

Speaking of the cultural reach of Magical Girls outside of its demographic:

Narutaki’s picks:

  • Delicious Design
Do you know Pantone chips? Do you want to eat them? Well, now your dreams have come true. While these aren’t chip flavors, they still fit the bill quite well.
  • Why One Piece is a Hit Time and Again
One Piece’s unwavering loyalty to its roots keeps it great for the long haul. The observation of Luffy not having an inner monologue is also a excellent point.
  • Brave: New or Old?
Two articles discussing whether Pixar’s upcoming Brave trods new ground or not are just one more thing I’m thinking about before the film comes out. I disagree with Otaku-kun and him lumping all females in Disney in the same camp. I think Mulan took a nice step forward where her purpose was not romance based at all, but she fell in love along the way. At the same time, Erik takes the opposite almost too far. Afterall, in the latest trailer we do see that Merida’s parents are trying to have her hand won in a tournament. Still, I agree that Brave doesn’t look to have romance at its forefront and may not tackle it all. If it wasn’t already obvious, I’m looking forward to this film most of all this summer.
  • Gameboys . . . ROLL OUT!

Without Noboru Ishiguro would the Legend of the Galactic Heroes anime been the same?
