Live Action Gundam Sousei at New York Anime Festival

September 23, 2009

Eventhough New York Anime Festival is still a baby compared to most other big cons, it has grown up rather quickly! Since it is in my own backyard I look forward to it but this year it had a special surprise in store that made me and others drop our jaws: Yoshiyuki Tomino. A guest this big just blows everything else out of the water for me. If there was nothing else to do at this convention, it wouldn’t matter one bit. I’d pay $50 to see Tomino so this is just like having a bunch of bonus features. And a press pass. No, don’t worry readers, I won’t actually only be reporting on the Tomino related goodness. Another feature of the con I am really looking forward to is the Cencoroll showing and we have a new panel this year! There is plenty to see and do, as always, though some industry absence is mysterious (Yen Press?). I have a feeling it will be good times again at this year’s New York Anime Fest!

Year three of New York Anime Festival has a lot to live up to. The past two years have been amazing for the con and prove that there are definite merits to being professionally run. There is a certain feel that can not be replicated by anything but being fan run but NYAF has the ability to get people like Yoshiyuki Tomino which is enough for me. I am curious how much of Tomino’s pure insanity is going to come out during the con. I mean this is the guy who just said video games are evil. I am sure whatever comes out of his mouth is going to be gold. Other than Tomino the thing I am most looking forward to is our Bloggers Roundtable panel. It’s our first time trying it out but I feel it has a great amount of potential. You take a bunch of people who are known for being insightful and eloquent then have them talk about fascinating topics. This is why people always talk about the Industry roundtable but this is a good deal more personal. We are going to have bloggers from About.com, Ani-Gamers, Anime Almanac, Anime Vice, The Gaming Dungeon, Ogiue Maniax, Reverse Thieves, and Subatomic Brainfreeze, all on one panel. If you are not attending the masquerade I really hope you can stop on in. We are also running our trusty Anime Recruitment panel on Sunday so if you are still around visit us there as well. Other than that we will be around all three days. We will have our homemade Reverse Thieves badges and t-shirts so look for us and say hello!

Our tentative schedule is as follows:

Basics of Intellectual Property Rights panel

Otakon, Return to the Motherland!

July 15, 2009

Ah, it feels so great to be returning to Otakon this year. There is just something so special about it and I don’t think I want to miss another one. This great love is what keeps me on the east coast convention wise. Like so many other years and conventions we are traveling in a large herd that includes Carl from Ogiue Maniax, Scott from Anime Almanac, and Evan from Ani-Gamers. Not to mention the many, many people we will be seeing during the convention. And, wow, a very nice guest list this year even if it was right down to the wire! Going right along with that, this is our first opportunity to attend as press giving us the chance to get a little closer to these amazing guests. We are also running panels so it will be a very well-rounded experience though we may be taking on too much. I expect a thoroughly enjoyable and busy time. I will be tweeting as much as I can from the con but I won’t have much Internet access otherwise. There will be fun, there will be food, there will be sleuthing, and there will be burning friendship! Otakon 2009, here we come!

I warn everyone that is in a post filled with dirty, filthy lies. There is so much to do, so much so see, so many people to talk with, and just any number of unexpected occurrences that can and will happen that I am sure this schedule will only be half right most of the time. More often than not it is not a matter of picking something to do but rather deciding between three equally awesome things. And as press we could be getting interviews as well so that makes everything even more up in the air. If you want to be guaranteed see both of us then your best bet is to attend our panels. We always give away great free stuff! I am bringing two Iron Mountain boxes filled with prizes this year so be there or be square. Other than that,  if you see someone with a Reverse Thieves badge or a Reverse Thieves shirt just say hello. We are always eager to talk. Also if you want to get me to attend your panel just ask. As long as I do not have something vital to do I will usually attend. I am easy that way. Now that I look at it, I have no where decent on the schedule to each lunch or dinner but that is why you bring snacks and drink lots of water. So hopefully I will have a kick arse time and so will everyone else who attends. Excelsior!

Our tentative schedule is as follows:

Anime Expo, Fake out!

June 24, 2009

I have never been to Anime Expo. It would cost me a good chunk of change to make such a trek and honestly it seems an unlikely venture, maybe ever. Beside the fact that it would mean giving up east coast conventions which is so hard to do! So, Expo and their amazing guest list will remain a dream for a while longer. However, instead of crying over how much it sucks that we won’t be in attendance for Anime Expo 2009, we decided to pretend we ARE going! I am not sure if this is actually helping but hey it’s a way to pass the time! So it goes without saying, don’t look for a con report from us about Expo!

Someone I was following on Twitter posted about that the schedule for Anime Expo was out. After glancing through it I was inspired; I wanted to make a schedule like we usually do for conventions we attend but for a convention we aren’t going to. Making this schedule was much like a fantasy baseball team. The post is sort of random and pointless but also sort of fun. Plus, I hope it makes some people go to the panels I wanted to go to and report back how interesting they are. Anime Expo seems like a great con this year. If I had the cash I would attend it without a doubt. So I hope people ask good questions of Yasuhiro Nightow and all the other guests in my place. Oh, and have an awesome time!

Our dream schedule is as follows:

Thursday

AnimeNEXT, Are we there yet?

June 10, 2009

It is officially convention season again! This time of year is always a lot of fun but takes quite a bit out of me. Plus, there is a lot of planning going on. While I think this year AnimeNEXT has been more on top of it compared to last year, that isn’t much of a compliment. Also this new location I know nothing about. Though it looked like such a pain commute I ended up getting a hotel room last minute. Still, we got our panel confirmation along with approval for press badges a couple of weeks before the convention so that is something. Speaking of our panel, that is right ladies and gentlemen, Reverse Thieves will be making their second appearance at AnimeNEXT! Come see our panel “I Can’t Believe You Haven’t Seen This!” on Saturday from 9-10AM. It’s early but come on! Oh, and we will be wearing Reverse Thieves t-shirts on Saturday. I know, I know we are like the coolest people you know.

AnimeNEXT is a mid-sized convention. It is bigger than a small con with it’s ability to swing some bigger guests and bands but is smaller than your 800 pound gorillas like Otakon and AnimeExpo. This gives it a unique feel. I am disappointed that we don’t have any awesome Japanese guests that interest me like we have in the past. But if you go in with the right attitude, and a few friends, any convention can be fun. Also good panels are good panels no matter where you go so I hope that this year’s panelists are up to par. Plus the dealers’ room is usually good. We will be running the “I Can’t Believe You Haven’t Seen This!” panel in Panel Room 2 with celebrity blogger Carl from Ogiue Maniax so you have two reasons to wake up early on Saturday. Also we will be giving away prizes at the end of the panel so that actually makes three! Don’t forget to check out Carl at the Anime Blogging Basics Panel on Sunday at 2 PM in Panel Room 1, too.

Our tentative schedule is as follows:

Friday
Funimation Sneak Peek Panel
Anime Through the Generations Panel
Anime’s Pirate Legacy Panel
Anime Princesses Rule Panel
Japanese Crime Fiction in Anime Panel
My Stereotypes are More Offensive than Yours Panel
These are a Few of My Favorite Scenes Panel

Saturday
I Can’t Believe You Haven’t Seen This! Panel
(This is our panel!) 9AM – 10AM

Misako Rocks! Panel
Vertical Panel
Anime/Manga Influence Panel
Business of Webcomics Panel
ParaPara Dance Workshop
Japanese Snacks and Sweets Panel
Funimation Panel
Bad Anime, Bad! Panel
As the Otaku Grows Panel

Sunday

Dear New York Comic Con, There might be such a thing as too many good guests.

February 4, 2009

New York Comic Con comes but once a year and this time it is rather early. This time around the guest list is off the charts of awesome! And the amount of things to do is near mind-boggling. I am so very happy to be attending this deal as press. With so much going on this will atleast ensure us some access to the things we most want to see and tell our readers about. Granted this blog specialize in anime, but we are fans of many geeky hobbies! So look forward to coverage from all the different elements brought together by New York Comic Con.

New York Comic Con says it is a comic convention and graphic artists are it’s specialty but it deals with every type geek related hobby including geek literature, films, TV shows, video games, and most every other type of game as well. I think there is so much to see and do that we are going to have to bring in secret agent Kohaku just to have someone go to all the events that we would like to cover as well as ask questions at all the panels where questions need to be asked. I am a little surprised that they seem to have absolutely no anime related guests but I think it is a sign that the NYAF is finally coming into it’s own so they see no reason do get any anime related guests. There also seem be be a good deal of professional panels that I am curious to attend now that I have the power of the press.
