If anyone has read the Reverse Thieves blog they will know that I even more than Narutaki love to wax poetic. Therefore we decided that I might as well put that too good use in a supplemental post about the anime of 1979 as our first draft was getting sort of monstrous. I was going on a bit too much on the little details that I found fascinating about the shows that year so we streamlined our post for the main Golden Ani-Versary around some solid themes and then threw my random observations and quirky esoterica about the shows we watched for this post. If our main post yesterday looks at how each show contributed to greater themes of the year than this looks at why each show had its own charm. Continue reading

Set the DeLorean to 1979
If you pay attention to the anime and manga blogging community you may have noticed the The Golden Ani-Versary of Anime project. Geoff Tebbetts decided to celebrate 50 years of anime being on television by having different bloggers each take a year from 1963 to 2013 and discuss how it fits into the great portrait of the history of anime. We boldly decided to tackle 1979.
1979: Men are from Mars,
Women are from 18th Century France
As always, we are just slightly verbose so to keep everything in under the suggested 2000-word limit for the project we decided to divide up our thoughts into a couple of segments. This part here is a bonus introduction to our contribution to the project.

Hisui’s picks:
- Duke Fleed Protects Your Data
We have the first Kickstarter project that Narutaki has contributed to. This is for a UBS stick in the shape of Go Nagai’s UFO Robot Grendizer. If it does well enough maybe they will add Koji Kabuto’s Double Spacer to the mix. - What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas. Until the Con Report.
Otakon has announced that it is branching out to adding a second West Coast convention in January. This convention in Las Vegas seems to have a good amount of buzz from anime fandom. I’m curious to see what guests they can get with a more iconic American city that is closer to Japan. - Smash the World’s Shell. FOR THE MERCHANDISE OF THE REVOLUTION OF THE WORLD!
It maybe 16 years old but they are thankfully still making merchandise for Revolutionary Girl Utena. Buy some while you wait for Penguinbear. Also if you read Japanese (or just like pictures) here is some additional swag. - The Protagonist With No Name
The latest trailer for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle shows that the main character from JoJolion has been added to the roster. I was wondering if they were going to include him at all considering that Part 8 has not been running that long. - My Little Pony Discovers how to Make ALL the Money
When you combine 2 fandoms in to one product like that it is almost impossible not to make some crazy money.
Narutaki’s picks:
- Streaming ACTUALLY Matters
Finally, Neilsen is implementing technology to measure streaming TV data starting with the fall 2013 line-up. The new process is low on details thus far and the first time around certainly won’t be perfect, but it is a step in the right direction. Will we soon see shows saved by their online streaming audiences that don’t tune-in to a show’s regular time slot? I hope so.
- Draw in 3D
Yeah, seriously, I have no words so cool.
