Ongoing Investigations: Case #002

I just watched the second Kara no Kyoukai movie so I might as well talk about the first and the second movie. There are going to be seven Kara no Yoko movies each based on a chapter of the original series. Each chapter is partially a self contained story but they also all build to a unified story. The first story is a ghost story with a bit of a flashy action sequence at the end. We are dropped in the middle of the story with a decent amount of time to develop who everyone is. The second is murder mystery with the origin of how the main characters met. I don’t know why Ask John was so harsh on the second film. It was clearly meant to be an unfinished story. It presents a mystery that makes you wonder what happened that is clearly only meant to be solved in the last film. I think it is clearly a series of movies for fans of Kinoko Nasu. It’s his first major work so I feel the story telling is not as polished as his later works but I still found it entertaining. The visuals are certainly theatrical quality so it is a pleasure to watch. As far as I can tell without ever reading the original stories the adaptation is fairly faithful unlike previous Type-Moon series.

Macross Frontier 13 was exactly what I wanted to see. It actually started with 12 and continued on into this one. Ranka singing and saving the world with it, Alto fighting like hell to keep her safe, secrets revealed, explosions, awesome robot fights, and a good cliffhanger! YES YES YES! Throw in some cute moments between Ranka and Alto (which they did) and I’m basically set for life. I felt as if I have been waiting for this and now my love for the series has really burst forth. I also found it funny that in original Macross I really started to love it about the same number of episodes in.

I am also pretty sure one character who “died” in this episode can’t be dead because they were just getting interesting. They went from seemingly unimportant minor side character with intriguing questions hanging around them, to major conspirator, to dead. I don’t think so. I’m usually not one to complain about the ability to kill off characters but this character was just coming into their own.

I watched a few more episodes of GaoGaiGar. It is distinctly formulaic but it is still fun. I am curious how it supposedly it goes from a by the numbers kids giant robot show to something beyond that but I’m still in the formula section. This show has made me come to the realization that giant robot shows are nothing more than magical girl shows for boys. They have many of the same tropes just in different guises. They both have similarly organized bad guy organizations; they usually have the same recycled transformation sequences; they both have recycled finishing moves; also the finishing moves is usually upgraded at the exact same rate in both types of shows.

I was really worried about not getting my Nosatsu Junkie volume 6. However, TokyoPop did not fail me. I was really pleased with this volume, there is a huge turning point and then a cliffhanger so we don’t know the results of said turning point till the next volume. We are also seeing Naka moving into the spotlight with her modeling career. This effects Umi is some interesting ways including making him jealous and making him worry about losing his top spot, but inevitably he loves Naka more. Their relationship continues to amuse me and I love watching their hilarious and sweet encounters. Can’t wait for the next volume!

I just read One Piece chapter 506 and wow did we get some major revelations. We finally learn a good deal about the capture and execution of Gold Roger. There was something that was never quite right about the whole deal and it is finally explained. One Piece has been making a good effort to get to explaining some of the mysteries of the series as of late. I know that Daryl Surat had complained that he stopped reading One Piece because he could not get over that they kept bringing up plot threads but never resolving them. I never really was too distressed at any unresolved plot threads. I never got the feeling that they would not be resolved but I can’t say I’m unhappy that they are starting to be tied up.

Read the latest chapter of NANA. I love Ai Yazawa with all my heart but I am a bit put off by the things going on in this story recently. It seems like the longer it goes on the less she knows where she is going with it. What with the forward flashes not seeming to connect with the current arc. And funnily enough that character I have been loving and care the most about currently is Reira. She is driving things to happen and she also seems to care about the people around her. I find myself wishing for a conclusion and soon. Oh and as usual I hate Yuri, FREE NOBU!

For some reason I see Narutaki flying to Japan and starting a sit in protest outside Ai Yazawa in the way one would start a free Tibet protest. That’s it for this week’s investigations! Look for a new case file every Friday!

Special Screening: Paprika w/ Satoshi Kon, Get out of my dreams, get into my car.

Well, this little shindig was rather spontaneous, we only got the notice that we got the tickets the morning of the event! It would have been quite easy to miss it. But somehow the anime gods smiled down!

I don’t always check my email in the morning and I can’t check my personal email at work so it was luck that I got to go and was able to let Narutaki know. There were enough people who tried to get tickets that a lottery had to be held so the fact that we got tickets is a little bit of luck in itself. There were quite a few people hoping to get unclaimed seats when I entered the theater so I guess we should be thankful. I guess the anime gods decided that a Satoshi Kon review was in order.

I had never been to the Imaginasian Theater, though I had always wanted to go. The building definitely seemed old and I think there is just the one theater we were in if I’m not mistaken. But it is nice to have someplace, anyplace, dedicated to showing Asian films. The line outside was rather disorganized and quite a few people were complaining about the lack preparation. However, we got in fine, saw some familiar faces, and had perfectly good seats. This event was sponsored by All Nippon Airways and we got free popcorn!

It was a nice enough theater. Nothing stood out as amazing but nothing was horrible about it. I would definitely go see another movie there, especially since they cater to such a interesting niche. I hope we can go back and catch Sword of the Stranger. That looks like it could be good. I love almost anything that is free and free popcorn is especially good. So thank you ANA. Of course since I am immature all I could think of was one thing. An their logo does not help one bit. Does this mean I am on the path to becoming a fujoshi. I hope not.

Yes, actually it does mean that. And we are so going to see Sword of the Stranger, I have been hyping that movie in my mind for almost a year. Satoshi Kon spoke briefly before the film and answered a few questions. I was really enjoying his thoughts on dreams. He was mentioning how he felt it was painful to hear other peoples’ dreams because it is almost impossible to understand them. Dreams are so personal that they mean very little to anyone else. So he really focuses on the visual aspects of dreams.

I oddly enough like to hear about other peoples’ dreams. Dreams can be rather abstract therefore it’s sometimes hard do dig out an insight from them but they tend to be a rather unguarded part of people minds that they share despite this fact. I will agree that dreams can be very personal and therefore will not mean as much to another person, but there are some commonalities in dreams as well. How many people have had the dream where they arrive at a test they are totally unprepared for? Or are running from something they can’t see but they know is horrible? Some dreams are just for you and others are universal.

You are right about some common things that everyone dreams about. However, I think interpreting a dream is all over the place. You mentioned some basic ones that generally everyone sees in the same way, but every culture has different ways of interpreting things in dreams so I think this is where it can become very personal. Someone also asked how he balances the need for commercial success and his own artistic merit. He made some amusing comments about he isn’t actually commercially successful quite yet because he has odd taste. He then spoke about pleasing his fans and continuing to do that while pushing his work into the commercial light. I don’t know if his films will ever reach the height of Ghibli but I do think his audience grows more and more with each one released. He is also very well known in film and artistic communities so his continued success seems eminent.

I can’t see his movies getting to the universal acceptance of a Studio Ghibli movie unless he changes his directorial style and I get the impression that he does not want that. He makes artistic movies that appeal to people who watch artistic movies. Studio Ghibli makes artistic films that appeal to families so they getting more box office. I think if he wanted to make movies with a more universal appeal he could but he chooses to satisfy himself and his fan-base by staying with his own personal approach to movies.

You absolutely on the mark there, but I think he will still grow to be a very well-known director and become much more successful before he is through. Not everyone will know him, not everyone will like his style, but he will be adored by those that do.

Paprika is about a research team that develops a machine called the DC Mini, it lets you enter someone’s dreams and interact with them. The device was meant to be used as a psychotherapy tool to help people by examining their dreams. Before the device’s security features can be fully implemented, an unknown party steals the device and starts to use it to control and terrorize people. A dream terrorist. So it’s up to the research team to find out who stole the DC Mini before he can reek havoc on the minds of the research team as well as everyone else in town.

I had started watching Paprika a couple of weeks ago but only finished about one-third. This was not because I wasn’t interested in what was going on but just a timing issue. So it was fun going into this not knowing everything that was going to happen on the screen. And is quite an expected ride. What caught me originally and seeing it on the big screen even more so is the opening credits. I love the movement, the music, and the playfulness. In fact, this film really combines suspense and humor in just the right amounts.

This was my second time seeing the film so I got to go back and see what things were hinted at in the beginning that seemed insignificant the first time through. It’s not exactly like Fight Club or The Sixth Sense where there is some major twist to go back and reflect upon, but the movie is complex enough that a second viewing will show you some additional layers. It’s also worth a second viewing if for nothing else the lush visuals. The dreamscapes are beautifully animated and strikingly colored so they are extremely pleasing to eye. The characters are well developed in the short amount of time they are on the screen and are generally realistic people.

Paprika is a “dream movie star.” She appears in your dreams and helps you through them, to understand them, and to ultimately win against them. She is all things and anything in the dream world but most often appears as young woman. She is like the link between reality and imagination but you are never quite sure if she exists in one or the other or both.

Paprika and Atsuko Chiba are definitely Satoshi Kon characters. They seem to be part of the same spiritual family as Chiyoko Fujiwara (Millennium Actress) and Mima Kirigoe (Perfect Blue). All of them are women with a links to a blurry line between their dreams and their realities. Paprika is the women of your dreams. I would go as far as to say that she is more a piece of the dreams of everyone she interacts with rather than the avatar of one person. This is despite what she was originally meant to be. I think Paprika is always supposed to be a creature of dreams but the real question is how real does that make her.

And that really ties into the theme of the movie. Satoshi Kon’s whole thesis (to me) in his films is about what makes reality real and where do dreams end and how the two effect each other. It really came across in the dialogue when Paprika’s counterpart questions her with, “Why don’t you listen? You are a part of me!” to which Paprika replies, “Have you ever thought that maybe you are a part of me?” So the line is blurred and as the viewer you certainly have your opinion on what is real in the film, you also realize that one couldn’t exist without the other.

I feel his movies can also be about the danger of falling too far into your dreams to the point where you damage your real life. If you ignore either part of your existance the other part is damaged and in the end you become damaged as well. Both parts are integral to your life but it’s important to keep them separate and balanced. All the characters except Paprika in the movie ignore or overindulge some aspect of their existance and suffer for it.

To round out this discussion I thought it apt to mention Paprika’s comparison of dreams to the Internet. I found it very poignant. Where else can you pretend you are someone else when awake? I think it is just another example of how dreams cross over into the world of reality. How far the Internet has come from merely being an information source.

There is a character who often interacts with his dream by going online. He receives therapy and interacts with the others characters in the dream world while using the Internet. In a way the Internet is filled with mundaneness, fantasy, hope, joy, madness, and nightmares just like dreams. The Internet is, as always, also where people can run away from their reality.

I loved this movie. It is my favorite Satoshi Kon film. It is funny because I saw Perfect Blue when it first came out in English and it almost ruined Kon for me. Not that it was a bad film, on the contrary, I thought it was very good. But that movie scared me and I don’t like to be scared in a psychological manner. It stuck with me and made me almost never watch another of his films again. I am sure glad I got over it.

Ongoing Investigations: Case #001

I have been eating up Daughter of Twenty Faces every week. I anxiously await the next episode and I love that feeling. I was really happy to hear DoTF was given a 26 episode run after initially having only 13. Being a lover of detective fiction, it is not hard to imagine me glomming onto this show. However, the show is also really good! Albeit over the top but I think that is what is so exciting, it wraps all things detective into it but still manages to surprise you. Episodes nine and ten start to establish some of the stuff we see in the opening and ending. I have a bit of theory and am curious if it is true. Detective stories constantly have red herrings so it’ll be interesting to see this play out.

Finally watched the last episode of Tower of Druaga. I have to say, this series turned out to be pretty good. Finally some decent fantasy anime. I was glad we didn’t get some huge information dump in this last episode, just the end of an arc. I am definitely looking forward to the next season. And it was a good experiment by Gonzo, the whole coming out at the same time as the Japanese. I was really happy with the results.

Watched the finale of Zettai Kareshi (Absolute Boyfriend). This live action comedy/drama is loosely based on the Yuu Watase work of the same name. With all the changes that were made to the story I was surprised, pleasantly, how close the ending came to the original as far as feelings. I was unhappy with a few of the middle episodes, but I liked the approach they took of showing Night becoming human (and Riko realizing it) slowly where in the manga I never really thought of him as anything but. Overall, it’s a cute series for women.

I watched the American live action Fist of the North Star movie. It is mostly a retelling of the first part of Hokuto no Ken, Kenshiro’s fight with Shin. It is definitely a silly movie but it really seems that it wants to reproduce what makes Hokuto no Ken such a popular franchise world wide. Lots of the story details are correct but it seems to miss the spirit overall. It does not help that when ever Kenshiro does his signature moves they come off more silly than fearsome. It’s oddly enough a fun movie if you just want a cheesy martial arts film but a blasphemy if you want the definitive live action Hokuto no Ken.

Also watched the last four episodes of Sexy Voice and Robo another live action comedy/drama. It is also loosely based on an unfinished seinen manga. I originally picked this up because Kenichi Matsuyama plays Robo, you may know him as L. Sexy Voice and Robo investigate weird occurrences but they always end up helping people. It was a lot of fun but also always had a little moral or something in it. It has a hopeful vibe and Niko (Sexy Voice) our 14-year-old protagonist can sometimes be profound.

I watched all of Karin recently. I was in the mood for a light romantic comedy and Karin fit the bill. It’s definitely a shonen romance series, but I can see why it has found a fan following among girls in the U.S. If you add in vampires to anything you have to go out of your way to turn off girls. It can be done but you have to try pretty hard. I am looking at you Rosario + Vampire. I liked Karin and Kenta and the rest of the side cast was amusing. Karin being a blood making vampire is certainly inventive as well. I like how vampires work in the Karin universe. The fact that vampires in Karin drain emotions along with blood is a novel approach to the vampire mythos while still being conducive for comedy. The only thing I have to bringing up is that the vampire hunter’s costumes in this series have to be the goofiest thing on Gackt Camui’s green earth. I know this is a comedy but seriously.

Read the first book of Goong, a very popular manhwa. A prince has to marry a commoner who his grandfather made a promise to. Neither of them are too happy with the idea. Can’t say I’m all that impressed as of yet but it has left me curious enough to pick up atleast the next volume. It has potential. Though no one really captured my attention. The art is only great on occasion, though I know it is long running so that can change. I have been on a shojo romance hiatus for a while so maybe I just wasn’t ready for another foray yet.

I just read book ten of Eden: It’s an Endless World! and Hiroki Endo is more than willing to kill off characters. Every time I think that a character can’t be killed, Hiroki Endo proves me wrong and murders them in epic fashion. Hiroki Endo is also a genius because he will often put a character in several near fatal situations and have them pull though before ultimately killing them. This means you never know if a character is just in a tight situation or they going to meet their maker. All too often you are not worried about characters because you have a good idea of who is going to live and who is going to die. Eden makes sure every book is tense because you have no guarantees anyone lives. I highly recommend everyone try this series because it’s not doing that well but it should be. It’s a gritty cyberpunk series with a good mix of action, sex, and gnostic symbolisms. It should be flying off the shelves.

Picked up Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2 and have barely put it down. I loved the original so I am glad to have more with a bit of an updated system, new races, and some new jobs. The laws don’t have the crazy consequences of the first and also as long as you play within the law your clan gets different bonuses. Oh and for anyone that thought the first game was too easy, this one has a difficulty setting. Haven’t gotten into the plot much yet, got sucked into the Ivalice world and am now looking for a mage to help me figure out how to get home. Not sure if I love the main character yet ( I love you Marche!) but I don’t by any means dislike him. And Adelle is nowhere near as cool as Ritz. I am hoping these characters grow on me.
