Case Closed Reviews: Fall 2013 / Winter 2014

A new short podcast series! First impressions are great but what about our thoughts after we’ve watched an entire series week to week? We figured our listeners might want to hear our final impressions as well so we’ve created the Case Closed Review podcast. Just like the S.W.A.T. The Speakeasy #051: Upside-down Pineapple, March Movie Madness

Drink #051: Upside-down Pineapple
March Movie Madness

Unlike all the other East Coast anime fans, we didn’t head to Anime Boston this month. Instead, we talk about all the movies we saw during March. Okay, yeah, fine we couldn’t come up with a real, all encompassing topic, okay? But hey, you get two anime movie reviews (Patema Inverted and Giovanni’s Island both of which played at the NYICFF) and our thoughts on the Veronica Mars movie (have we ever sounded this ridiculously happy in a podcast before?).

And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink:

Upside-down Pineapple

  • 1/2 oz. Vodka, vanilla
  • 1/4 oz. Grenadine
  • 1 oz. Pineapple Juice

Shake vanilla vodka and pineapple juice with ice and strain into shot glass. Add grenadine. The grenadine will sink to the bottom and will give this shot a very sweet conclusion.

Modern Shojo: Narutaki’s Most Wanted Part 3

narutaki_icon_4040 This time I’m listing a catch-all of Kodansha titles that I’d like to see licensed for English release with no real theme except “HEY I WANT TO READ THESE AWESOME BOOKS, NOW PUT THEM ON CR.” These are a few titles that have been on my radar lately, but are by no means the only things worth bringing over.

3D Kanojo by Mao Nanami

This series has surprised me a lot, especially with a name like 3D Kanojo. I’m sure your mind, as mine, conjures all kinds of things when hearing such a title, but do not fear I’m not here to lead you astray. But the series is indeed about an otaku boy who starts dating a pretty girl.

Iroha has dated a lot and has a bit of reputation which is exactly what attracts her to Tsutsui’s quiet nature. Iroha reminds me of Yoko Maki’s big-eyed heroines who brandish a bit of attitude. Tsutsui, suspicious and harsh to Iroha at first, realizes he may have found someone very special. What feels really good in this series is the way neither one judges the other instead seeing through to one anothers’ hearts. Oquie Maniax did a good write-up, too.
