Tell Rostov It’s Time to Die

A good while back Patz and I did a guest spot a podcast for Phillip’s I Heart The 80′s podcast. In that legendary and seemingly lost podcast we talked about a breathtaking work of staggering genius in the field of cinema. We took our cinematic expertise to the limit when we discussed Joseph Zito’s auteur classic, Invasion USA. The movie is both a shockingly raw critique of the American mindset and a Kafkaesque examination of the psychology journey of the protagonist through an inner landscape of angst and ennui.

Or it is a very silly Chuck Norris movie where a redneck ninja commando kills a bunch of dirty foreigners trying to take over America. In the most silly ways possible.

Either way I think you will enjoy the ride. Listen to the episode and convince Phillip to talk about more amazing (and amazingly bad) 80s movies.

Tomorrow, When The Chuck Norris Began…

REPOST – The Speakeasy #006: The Black Russian and the White Russian, The Art of Adaption

Drink #006: The Black Russian and the White Russian,
The Art of Adaption

A majority of the anime produced is based on a preexisting work. A good deal of shows are adapted from manga but there is also anime based on light novels, video games, literature, and even some more unusual sources. But not all anime is adapted equally. Assuming that the source being adapted is solid, what makes a good anime adaption and where can adaptation go wrong? We will be talking about the different philosophies used in adapting works and the strengths and weaknesses that comes with any strategy. We will also try and discover why the adapting an anime into a manga seems to fail so often.

The Speakeasy #036: Sundowner, Saying Goodbye to 2012

Drink #036: Sundowner,
Saying Goodbye to 2012

As is tradition, for our final episode of 2012 we look back on the news and licenses for the year. It is always nice to reflect on what was the most important trends and new pieces from the year now that we have a little distance. Certain things that seem so bloody important when they first happen can fade wordlessly into the woodwork just as easily as some minor points turn out to be monumental in reflection. It is also a great to be thankful for what titles we get. This is always a nice way to round out the year so we can go into 2013 hoping for the best.

I hope to see everyone for another year of podcasts as The Speakeasy enters its third year with a new opening and closing. Until then: Cheers!
