The Speakeasy #017: Viking Funeral, The Life and Death of Tokyopop

Anime 3000 presents The Speakeasy Podcast:
Drink #017:
Viking Funeral,
The Life and Death of Tokyopop

By both listener request and our own desire we discuss the influential, good or bad, life of Tokyopop. From the beginning it seemed like they had new ideas and were setting out to do something different. They rode high for a while, but things started to slip in the mid-2000s at the heart of the manga boom. It is undeniable that they changed the U.S. industry so we reminisce and discuss all that came with it.

And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink:

Don’t expect us to explain Star Driver.

So we did a little podcast with Patz over on Insert Disc along with Elliot from Ani-Gamers. We dive right into a high-level Star Driver discussion so even if you don’t care about spoilers, it probably all sounds like nonsense unless you’ve seen the show. Whoops! But before that you can hear us discuss streaming anime, Crunchyroll’s new news initiative, and a few other things.

Bonus Round – Blood Rubies Are Forever

In our second contribution for the Bonus Round on Anime3000, Narutaki looks at the first Dragon Ball movie. Before there was the many levels of Super Saiyan and space aliens aplenty there was the story of young Goku trying to find the Dragon Balls while flying around on a cloud. Narutaki looks at the retelling of the origins of the Dragon Ball franchise now that it has finally been released uncut for an English-speaking audience. I hope you don’t mind that to pay the bills we threw on a little commercial for a driving school. They are sort of the international version of the RED Driving School. If this goes well maybe Anime3000 can get some more sponsors in the future.
