The Speakeasy #037: Apple Pie Shots VS. Apple Grande, Theories on the Methods of Consumption

Drink #037: Apple Pie Shots VS. Apple Grande,
Theories on the Methods of Consumption

Thee most common question to ask someone who is also into anime is, “what anime do you watch?” It is a fairly good way to judge someone’s tastes. But the far less often asked question is, “how do you watch anime?” While it does not give the depth of information that the first question is able to impart, it does color the way you view series. Some series benefit from being watched in one fell swoop while others are best parsed out over time. Some anime almost demand to be watched with a group while other benefit from an intimate and solitary audience (and I’m not just talking about porn). The question is which show fits into which category.

To help us answer the question, we brought in the always opinionated Daryl Surat from Otaku USA and the Anime World Order.

REPOST – The Speakeasy #006: The Black Russian and the White Russian, The Art of Adaption

Drink #006: The Black Russian and the White Russian,
The Art of Adaption

A majority of the anime produced is based on a preexisting work. A good deal of shows are adapted from manga but there is also anime based on light novels, video games, literature, and even some more unusual sources. But not all anime is adapted equally. Assuming that the source being adapted is solid, what makes a good anime adaption and where can adaptation go wrong? We will be talking about the different philosophies used in adapting works and the strengths and weaknesses that comes with any strategy. We will also try and discover why the adapting an anime into a manga seems to fail so often.

The Speakeasy #036: Sundowner, Saying Goodbye to 2012

Drink #036: Sundowner,
Saying Goodbye to 2012

As is tradition, for our final episode of 2012 we look back on the news and licenses for the year. It is always nice to reflect on what was the most important trends and new pieces from the year now that we have a little distance. Certain things that seem so bloody important when they first happen can fade wordlessly into the woodwork just as easily as some minor points turn out to be monumental in reflection. It is also a great to be thankful for what titles we get. This is always a nice way to round out the year so we can go into 2013 hoping for the best.

I hope to see everyone for another year of podcasts as The Speakeasy enters its third year with a new opening and closing. Until then: Cheers!
