Last week I got together with Patz from Insert Disc and Carl from Ogiue Maniax to record an episode of Podlabor that had been anticipated for a while. Where in we gush about Brave Police J-Decker, a giant robot show from the early 90’s that we all just recently watched to completion. I had talked about it a little on the blog, but this recording was way more fun! Check out the podcast, check out J-Decker, they are both a good time!
It is rather hard to believe but we’ve watched all of Legend of the Galactic Heroes. ALL OF IT! But it seems like less of a celebrated victory and more of a melancholy reality that this is all there is to the epic of Reinhard and Yang. I don’t have to say too much because if you’ve made it to the movies you are already invested. But actually it is worth nothing that you could watch (two out of three) the films to know if this is a series you want to dive into.
And so we come full circle with Legend of the Galactic Heroes. We started in the middle of Reinhard’s plot to overthrow the Empire and followed Yang and Reinhard’s rise and fall through the ranks in four arcs as both men tried to nurture their ideals. We then went back with two side stories that showed how both men were molded by the corrupt systems that raised them but remained true to higher ideals. These last three movies tie both of the halves together. Our lasts steps in this unimaginable space operas has us re-examining where it all began.
The anime blogging community is always a strange little place. As far as I can tell there are three major camps within it. There are the episodic bloggers, the reviewers, and the editorial bloggers. Some blogs combine two or even three of those styles but most people fall firmly into one categories and perhaps dabble in the other two. From what I can tell the greatest divide is between episodic bloggers and the editorial bloggers with reviewers being in the middle. So as writers who work on a mostly editorial blog we both wanted a little insight into the episodic blogging experience. Naturally, we picked a detective show for our test. Now that this experiment has run its course lets us examine what we thought of Gosick and the experiment as a whole.
I wanted to walk a mile in the shoes of an episodic blogger because I am just that curious. Granted most blogs of this nature follow more than one show, but I just wanted to walk a mile, not set up shop. Not only was Gosick a detective show, but it was a series we were already familiar with. But would the format of our reviews ruin my experience of the show?
