Otaku NYC: Cafe Zaiya

New York has quite a variety to offer in Japanese cuisine. Cafe Zaiya has great not too sweet desserts and cakes, but I’m mentioning them more for their bento and riceballs! These are things every anime fan sees constantly and is probably curious about.

As can imagined, the lunchtime crowd for Cafe Zaiya is rather hefty but that is also when they have the most choices since going later in the day may result in them being out of certain items. This also ensures that things are fresh that day. I recommend the salty shrimp tempura riceball and the spicy curry one. And pay attention to the way they are wrapped, the seaweed is actually not touching the rice until you pull off the plastic. They also provide hot and cold lunches. Now even though I said this was mostly a post for lunch items, the desserts are hard to pass on. I’m a big fan of the melon and chocolate chip pan, but they have many other familiar cakes, such as a very light strawberry shortcake, and the like. It it worth remembering that Japanese sweets are much less sugar intense than American ones. Cafe Zaiya is an easy place to just grab and take to the park or wherever you are headed or you can stop by in the morning to pick up something later for lunch.

Cafe Zaiya has three locations in Manhattan, one right inside of Kinokuniya which is rather convenient. However, you’ll find better variety in the other two shops on 41st ad near Cooper Square.

All Points Bulletin: Caricatures of Mecha Hitler

If you have any suggestions for what to highlight on an APB drop us a line via email or Twitter.

 Narutaki’s picks:

  • The Go-To Villain Before Hitler
Ever wonder whose name people evoked as the epitome of evil long before Hitler laid siege to the world?
  • Miles IS the Modern Spider-Man
Brett writes a thoughtful article on why Miles is different, relatable, and true to the current age. I’ve only read the first issue but I too was pleased with the direction.
  • Caricatures Through History at the MET
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has opened the “Infinite Jest” exhibit featuring drawings, some rarely seen, from artists such as da Vinci and Toulouse-Lautrec to Al Hirschfield and James Gillray.
  • Batman Shorts from Wallace and Gromit’s Studio
No details on this beyond that it is in the works, but in any case I think we can expect a very different take on the character with more humor. Perhaps a bit like Batman Brave and the Bold?
  • A New Takes on the Justice League and Legion of Doom
Webcomic creator Aaron Diaz tackles rebooting DC characters himself in light of the recent changes. These are some fun takes, though I’d note that both Superman and Wonder Woman are doing some of the things he mentions for their stories already; i.e. fighting for little guy and going back to the mythology roots. In any case, I’d read these stories but I’m also happy with the real reboot, too!
  • Johnny Depp Tapped to Play Dr. Seuss
A new live action film about the life of author Dr. Seuss is in the works. Johnny Depp is producing the film and may be starring it is as well.

Fate/Zero TV #002: Never Enough Saber

For everyone who assumed this episodes would be non stop fighting you should have known that while Gen Urobuchi wrote the original light novels you should also always remember that Kinoko Nasu’s powers of infinite exposition are invincible. The episode is even called False Start as to warn you that there is going to be some action but not the full throw down you are hoping for. So while I will patently wait for everything to be set up I know a few people are going to hit the ejector seat after the continuing amount  setup in this episode. There is some great payoff coming but not everyone can wait that long. But trust me it is coming.
