The Speakeasy: A Reverse Thieves Podcast – Drink #005

Drink #005: Summer Gin Punch, Suspension of disbelief (or lack thereof).

You are watching a movie and then you notice something. Maybe it’s a machine you use at work that you know does not work that way; maybe it is the incorrect presentation of the rules of a sport you play; or maybe just a piece of dialog that rings untrue. The second you realize something is off  you spend the rest of the movie picking it part. You have been taken out of the movie and cannot get back in. We use the movie Summer Wars as a spring-board to examine this phenomenon and how it shapes our perception of a work.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Final (for now) Thoughts

Warning: We assume that you have watched Legend of the Galactic Heroes before reading this. We will spoil anything and everything.

In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is kind of an oddity in that its fans reverie it, rightfully so, and basically everyone else has never heard of it. But having experienced it, it really is the cream of the crop when it comes to anime and even more so space opera. I don’t really have a top favorites list of anime, but I do have ones that stick out to me the most and for a long time nothing has really broken into that category, that is until LotGH came along.

hisuiconWhile we have covered all of the anime related to the first 10 books of Legend of Galactic Heroes saga we saved our final thoughts on the 4th season as well as the series as a whole for this bonus post.  We did this so you could read these posts along with watching the show and avoid spoilers for any section you were watching. This also gives us a chance to talk about a few things outside of the work proper itself like the fandom or specific characters that would require us to spoil parts of the ending. And ultimately it  is gives us one last chance to sell people reading spoilers on exactly why this series is worth sitting through 110 episodes in the main series let alone the movies and side stories.

The Sore Feet Song: Mushishi MMF Podcast

hisuiconThe Movable Manga Feast is a project started by David of the The Manga Curmudgeon. Once a month a different manga that needs some attention is highlighted and over the course of a week everyone participating writes an article about the title in question. It is called a Movable Manga Feast because every month a different person is in charge of aggregating all the articles for the MMF. This month’s topic was Mushishi by Yuki Urushibara. You can read our contribution to the MMF here. Ed Sizemore of Comics Worth Reading was the host who decided to cap off his turn by having a podcast with some of the participants reflecting on Mushshi. I sadly went on without Narutaki since he was feeling a little under the weather. Along with Ed, David, and I was Linda from Animemiz, Daniella from All About Manga, and Johanna from Comics Worth Reading. We had a lively and stimulating discussion about the franchise.
