Otakon 2013: Let the 20th Anniversary Celebration Begin!

(note: No Ongoing Investigations, Type-Moon Weekly News Round Up, or All Points Bulletin this week.)

20 Years of Otakon? As if it wasn’t exciting enough every year anyway! They’ve pulled out all the stops to bring as many guests as they could pack in. There are also a load of concerts, screenings, and events that aren’t to be missed.

As always, we’ll be covering as much as we can running around the convention center day and night. Do stop us to say hello though! And be sure to attend Alain’s panel on Saturday evening: Kill ’em All and Let Sunrise Sort ’em Out: A Yoshiyuki Tomino Panel.

Happy 6th Birthday Reverse Thieves!

We have two major State of the Union moments built into the blog. We might casually examine what we are doing with the blog countless times during the year but we have two inventories, one in the summer and one in the winter. And so it is time for our birthday assessment.

On our 6th year we don’t have that many new and innovative sections. The Type-Moon Roundup was added to the almost always neglected Saturday spot. It was mostly an outgrowth of the All Points Bulletin. It just seemed that there was always enough entries that we might as well highlight it. Narutaki also started posting wallpapers. She makes them all the time for herself so it just seemed like a simple idea for her to just share them with the readers.

Other than that it has been business as usual. Hisui has been doing a bunch of solo panels at conventions. The post count per week fluctuates but has been fairly good, staying at four+ posts per week on a regular basis.  The Speakeasy is still rolling right along and the S.W.A.T. Reviews have gained a good amount of listeners over the past couple of season.

The good ship Reverse Thieves still has a strong tailwind pushing it on its course.

In many ways, year six feels the most calm thus far. No big innovations or surprises. And maybe that is for the best. We haven’t stopped trying to innovate on the blog. We recently had a long conversation about what trends we should perhaps be capitalizing more on and which are worth ignoring. It is just that the blog has found its voice enough that radical changes are not constantly necessary.

Watch. Next month we will start a live streaming 3-D interactive battle network or some such nonsense. Then this post will look very silly.

GIVEAWAY

It is our birthday, but we give the presents! Here is how you can win a red dragon’s horde worth of treasure which includes mounds of DVDs and manga plus many other trinkets:

Leave a comment letting us know what your favorite section on the blog is and let us know what you’d like to see more of on Reverse Thieves.*

Entries are due by Saturday, July 13th. The winner will be notified on Sunday, July 21st. U.S. residents only.

(*As with anytime we solicit opinions from our readers we reserve the right to ignore any and all silly ideas. Because this blog always has been and always will be a Narutacracy.)

Crime Scene Investigations #005: AnimeNEXT 2013

This is a bonus segment of the Speakeasy Podcast we like to call Crime Scene Investigations. These are random bonus podcasts that we record live from various events. There is no regular schedule for these. We will put them up as quickly as we can when the opportunity for one occurs. We suspect they will mostly be from conventions but we might work in some interviews and conversation from NY events as fate allows.

The great Robeast that was AnimeNEXT 2013 could not be slain by a single podcasting mecha. It required the effort of an elite team of podcasters in combining lions to handle an event like this in the forsaken land of New Jersey. Evan and Ink from the Ani-Gamers podcast formed the legs. Vincenzo and Vince who were not only staff but also are part of the All Geeks Considered podcast formed the arms. And Xan from the Spiraken Manga Review formed the head. That makes me, Hisui, the Blazing Sword that let the team snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

If you want my written impression of AnimeNEXT you can find the main article here. The other reports from our illustrious pilots as well as the full story of harassment as a cosplayer are linked in this post.
