Lum is awesome and so not tsundere.

So, I was walking through the park and for some random reason I started thinking about the word tsundere. Maybe because I hate that word and I usually dislike characters that fall into that category. And probably also because I am a weirdo who thinks about anime pretty constantly. Consequently, I started thinking about how fans seem to want to label everything, but that is another article all together.

I’m vaguely curious if there was something in the park that made you think of tsundere characters but that is neither here nor there. I on the other hand really like tsundere characters because I’m a messed up human being. Maybe I just enjoy pain. I also have less trouble with people needing labels. People really like to classify things. That being said I would make sweet sweet love with Flag.

Hold the phone! Aren’t you over stating that a bit? You might like somecharacters that happen to be tsundere but you don’t always like characters who are. Right? RIGHT!? Ahem, that is a whole other article.

I like a wide variety of characters. I guess I think certain tsundere characters are be cute in their tsundere nature. I think Eri or Rin are sort of endearing; where as I don’t really care anything about Naru or Akane. I think you have a general prejudice against characters who are tsundere. I on the other hand am just a loser.

There seems to be a lot of categories people throw the show Urusei Yatsura into that seem wildly inaccurate. If you have never actually seen Urusei Yatsura, well first off why not? And secondly, it will probably be hard to understand what we are about to ramble on about.

Urusei Yatsura is the story of the most lecherous and unlucky boy in the world. Ataru Moroboshi hits on any pretty girl he can find but always strikes out partially because he is just unlucky and partially because he is super skeezy. One day, aliens from the planet of the Oni are about to invade the earth and they give humanity one chance to avoid being conquered. If they can defeat an Oni in a game of tag they will be spared an invasion.

Due to a random drawing Ataru is chosen as the Earth’s Champion. At first he wants nothing to do with the contest but after seeing his opponent is the beautiful princess of the Oni named Lum he agrees to try to catch her in order to feel her up. Ataru expects to win quickly until he learns that Lum can fly and shoot lightning. After several days of utterly failing at capturing Lum, his friend Shinobu agrees to marry Ataru if he can catch Lum. So the next day, Ataru gathers up all his cleverness and sleaziness and catches Lum. In his moment of triumph he shouts out a marriage proposal to Shinobu but Lum mistakenly agrees to marry Ataru assuming it was a proposal to her.

Isn’t that also because he tagged her by grabbing the horns on her head?

Well in Japanese, tag is called Onigokko, which means game of the Oni. Supposedly if you play tag with an Oni and you catch the Oni by the horns then the Oni will grant you a wish. So basically, Lum is fulfilling the wish she thinks that Ataru has made.

So Lum moves in with Ataru and basically acts like his wife. She usually acts very affectionate and devoted to him but will not hesitate to electroshock Ataru whenever he goes after other girls. Other characters from Earth and space begin to flock towards Ataru and Lum in typical Takahashi fashion.

Yes, Takahashi-sensei started making the a huge cast of characters with Urusei Yatsura and this has stemmed to her work since. And she creates the most convoluted, mixed-up, insane love quadrangle-tetrahedrons!

One thing that I’ve heard said, and fans constantly debate it, is that Lum herself, is the first example of the tsundere archetype. I really feel like this couldn’t be further from the truth.

I have to agree. The Internet likes to state things without anything even close to logic or proof behind it. They love to make one minor fact and make a whole totally erroneous argument from it while conveniently ignoring any and all contradicting evidence. If anyone is the prototype of the tsundere from Rumiko Takahashi it’s Akane Tendo.

A main stay of tsundere is to frustratingly act like you don’t like the person that you actually do. Lum makes no if, ands, or buts about who she is in love with. From the moment she becomes “engaged” to Ataru, he is the love of her life. And she really has no problem getting up in your face and letting you know that.

The secret appeal of the tsundere to the fans of the tsundere is the hard won approval from the tsundere after the hard battle of putting up with the outward coldness of the tsundere. If the girl comes out right off the bat and tells you she likes you and wants to be with you then she is not a tsundere. Lum will take any opportunity to declare her love and devotion to Ataru and often goes out of her way to prove her love when tested.

Furthermore, when Lum attacks Ataru, there are few people that could blame her. I mean what is Ataru’s personality? But most tsundere girls are constantly hurting their boys for doing nothing or for complete accidents. The guys usually have no idea what is going on.

Well I love Ataru (just like CLAMP who think he is SO handsome) but he is a super jerk (just like everyone else in Urusei Yatsura) and gets what he deserves most of the time. For some reason the Japanese really like that sort of physical humor and so tsundere girls are often physical in expressing their displeasure with guys.

Actually, I love Ataru also. But that is because everyone in Lum is a jerk but in a totally hilarious way.

Ryuunosuke is not a jerk. She is just a hard-luck woman.

If anyone in the relationship of Lum and Ataru is a tsundere, it’s Ataru himself. Ataru often pretends like he does not have feelings for Lum and wants to be separated from her. However, he occasional shows that he cares for Lum as much as she cares for him. This is all classic tsundere behavior.

The other odd thing is, many people call Urusei Yatsura the first harem show. Since Urusei Yatsura has a large number of female characters, and most of them are very attractive, and have some definite moe aspects to them, it must be a harem show. Plus, Ataru can be considered an average joe who is surrounded with beautiful women. I also think that anyone who says that is dead wrong. That’s like calling the car the first airplane because they are both forms of transportation. They have some very minor similarities but you are ignoring all of their differences.

What are people thinking? There are just as many dudes in Urusei Yatsura as there are girls. For what little harem anime I have actually watched, there seems to be an in-proportionate number of females to males. But in Lum there are guys chasing girls, girls chasing guys, and good-looking people on both sides. Hell no one except Lum even likes Ataru.

Shinobu sort of, but barely, likes Ataru in the beginning but as soon as Mendo appears she drops him like a rock. The cornerstone of harem anime is the milquetoast protagonist thats is loved by all the girls in the series because he’s just a great guy deep down even if most people can’t see it (others would argue for no reason at all). Usually the guys just have a few distinguishing characteristics but is an overall a nice guy. Ataru is anything but the stereotypical misunderstood nice guy. He is a horny, perverted, and selfish guy that occasionally shows hints of being a good guy underneath. If anything, he is the complete opposite of the harem master.

Plus, there are only two types of guys in harem anime who are not the main character. Even more nondescript guys that the protagonist to be background losers and romantic rivals who are bad dudes to be defeated in love. Although it can be argued that that “Lum’s stormtroopers” are the nondescript friends and Mendo is the romantic rival. However, there are more male types in Urusei Yatsura than just those two types.

But everyone is crazy in love with Lum. So if anything it’s like a harem show for girls, but then it isn’t that either. Because Lum just has too much sex appeal. Most harem shows have below average characters that have a bunch of good looking people in love with them for no reason at all. None of the guys are drop dead gorgeous, well except for Rei, but he is an idiot. But it is not a big shocker to see a bunch of guys falling all over themselves for Lum.

For shame. For shame! Are you saying Mendo is not drop dead gorgeous?

In my haste to type that sentence, I obviously was blinded by my love. Mendou is beautiful! Better?

Well Lum is still a sex symbol and a otaku icon of worship in Japan.

Hell, that girl has been on more advertising than most pop stars! Rumiko even drew her rooting for the Hanshin Tigers. And she is on like pasta packaging in Europe!

I also think your implying that you would not run off and marry Cherry. You have odd taste. Cherry is so dreamy.

The only category Urusei Yatsura should be thrown in is the hilarious one.

BTW – My favorite character from Urusei Yatsura is Shinobu.

Lights, camera, Nippon live action!

In America, if a cartoon gets really big, someone gets the idea that it might make a good live action movie. Nippon is no different in this regard. They have been making anime in live action movie form for a while now. In fact, the number of live actions is far beyond the scope of this blog. We are merely going to look at some of our favorite recent anime that have made the jump to the live action format.

One of the most popular and anticipated anime adaptions on both sides of the Pacific, have been the Death Note movies. The anime has mostly been a direct adaption of the manga. Other than a few added or removed scenes, it’s very faithful in its adaptation. The movies takes the 12 book manga and condense them into 2 movies. Like any film that takes that much material and condenses it into two movies, it requires them to remove series characters and plot lines. A lot of the middle, and a good deal of the end, of the manga is either removed or greatly altered. I know a lot of people loved the ending of the movie over the ending of the manga, while other people were rather indifferent to the movie’s ending. I think your preference really comes down to what you thought of certain characters.

The Death Note movies excite me! Especially now that it is licensed and going to be shown at two film festivals here in the U.S. And hopefully that translates into some theater showings afterwards. I really liked them because they basically end where I care for it to, and it ends in the way I would have wanted. I also feel the characters are brought to life nicely. L is right on target as far as I’m concerned. There is this part where he is making kebabs out of cakes and I thought, “yes, this is L!”

Well, apparently Japan loved L and his actor enough to make an L only spin off movie.

And I love L, too! But I’m not so sure about the L movie. Since it will be a completely original script I have no idea what to expect. However, seems like they are just throwing foder to rabid fans and churning something else out. I will probably watch it anyway…

Honey and Clover is a wonderful series that was an easy adaption to the live action realm. It is the story of a group of art students and how they deal with life and what it throws at them. The original manga is a very syergistic mix of comedy and drama. The live action movie tends to focus more of the drama of the story rather than the comedy, for better or worse. Also, Takumi Mayama comes of a bit more creepy than his manga counterpart. In the anime, he does have a somewhat obsessive (and definitely creepy) crush on Rika Harada, but he is a full-blown stalker in the movie. I know some people don’t like the casting of certain characters but I think they did a pretty good job in general.

The series, Lovely Complex, has kind of blown up. First a manga, one of the best selling shojo manga currently in Japan, then this live action movie, and the anime just finished up this year. The manga is licensed and now so is the live action movie! It is a cute, compressed version of the first 8 or 9 books. The seires is a very funny romacne between a below average height boy and an above average height girl. It was quite funny when I realized that Risa, the girl, is only 5’6 or 5’7. It has some really odd humor at times but it is typical humor of live action Japanese television. However, they are really weird and random since they are completely made up moments not appearing in the manga. Minus that, the movie does a good job of bringing the series to life. Teppei Koike, is a great and adorable live version of Otani.

Nodame Cantabile is a delightful adaptation of the popular josei, classical music manga. A lot of the live action adaptations contain a unique form of Japanese humor. As Natrutaki mentioned about Lovely Complex, TV shows tend to have an odd Japanese humor not usually seen in anime or manga. I think of all the movies and shows we mention, Nodame Cantabile best captures the humor of the original manga. It is about as close to a truly live action manga you’re going to get. The only laughter inducing casting is the totally Japanese Naoto Takenaka as the totally European Milch. In Naoto Takenaka’s defense, he makes a pretty darn good Milch.

Speaking of music manga, NANA is probably one of the most adaptable manga into live action. It has an overall real world feel to it, with characters who have believable flaws and grow as the story moves along. It combines music with love and friendship. The music is very good and both singles were hits. This movie as did very well in the theaters, and that is why it got a sequel which I have yet to see! I am holding out hope that the movies get picked up, as the manga is doing well and the anime has also been licensed. I was really impressed with the casting for these roles, especially that of Nana Oosaki. Mika Nakashima looks almost scarily like Nana herself. And Hiroki Narimiya who plays my favorite character, Nobu, is very charming. The movie takes place in what I like to call the first arc of the story, roughly the first four books. Nana Komatsu and Nana Oosaki both move to Tokyo at the same time pursuing different dreams but fate brings them to living together and so beings the story of two Nanas. They stick pretty closely to the manga, a few things take place at different times but overall close to the original. I am looking forward to the second movie, I know Mika is still playing Nana and Hiroki is returning as Nobu. I am interested to see if they start to deviate from the story a bit because the next parts of the series take a decidedly darker turn. If it stays on target, I think I know where the second movie will end.

The Cromartie High School movie is an adequate adaptation of an extraordinary manga. The setup for the live action movie of Cromartie is the same as the manga. Takashi Kamiyama is a good student that winds up at Cromartie high school. A high school filled with nothing but delinquents. Delinquents that include a robot, a Gorilla, and Freddy Mercury. About half way through the movie, it decides to go into its own story about aliens trying to take over the world using the students of Cromartie high school. It’s definitely true to the general spirit of the manga although it has its own style of humor.

I loved the Cromartie anime and was anxious to see the live action version. While I wasn’t disappointed, I wasn’t really impressed either. Clearly it was a step down when Hayashia had no purple mohawk that moved of its own volition. But it did make me laugh and still kept a lot of great moments from the series. I thought the Takenouchi story with motion sickness and switching with the plane hijacker were particularly hilarious and well done.

I would be remiss to not mention that my favorite manga, Maison Ikkoku, got turned into a live action movie and TV series with variable quality. I have oddly enough not seen either, but I have been sort of curious about the TV series. I know that Kyoko Otonashi is played by the woman who portrayed Hermes in the Train Man live action TV series. I liked her in Train Man, so I have a good feeling about that series. I also know the live action movie is supposedly horrible. If anyone has seen either give us a comment. I’m curious to what people think of either of them.

Last Quarter, another Ai Yazawa manga, was made into a live action movie. Since most girls have a major crush on Hyde it is hard to be objective about him. But his role is fairly small. Hiroki Narimiya is also in this movie, as the boyfriend who has a much bigger role than in the manga. The story itself is very odd and supernatural but the players in it are all very human. This is Ai Yazawa‘s power, in my opinion, but I’m not sure the movie gives the character development enough time. It pushes the most developed characters, in the manga, to the side in favor of bigger named actors. And the surprises come off as a little obvious in the movie. It was an okay watch but the characters came off a little flat.

Mushishi is most probably the most critically acclaimed movie on this list. It’s the story of a wandering mystic/scholar, named Ginko, who deals with the mysterious creatures know as Mushi. Mushi are primordial creatures who have a wide variety of strange abilities. Ginko’s job is to fix problems that come from humans and mushi interacting. Mushishi is,for the most part, a series of stand alone stories in which Ginko wanders into villages and learns how the local mushi and humans interact. The stories are often like modern day fairy tales. The movie is an adaptation of 4 stories from the manga. I heard some people complain that they don’t like the look of Ginko or wish that the movie had a new story that was not in the anime or manga. I think that the actor and the costume for Ginko looks good enough. I think the stories in the original manga are excellent so I don’t mind a direct adaption of their brilliance. When it was shown at the Venice Film Festival, they played it under the name Bug Master. It seems to be making the art movie circuit and getting positive reviews. I wonder if this is a title that will be picked up by someone like Viz or will one of the big boy studios like Sony swoop in?

Having seen pictures of the Mushishi movie, I am very anxious to see it. Ginko looks good to me, I’m not sure what the complaint about him is. But then I haven’t seen a drop of the actual movie. Hopefully living in NYC will give us an advantage since we get just about every movie that has a theatrical release. I have a feeling a larger studio may have their eye on it, maybe not Sony but something like New Line Cinema. This may also be why I can’t seem to find a subtitle track for it. Although, changing the name to Bug Master? Not a smooth move. While not wrong, it makes it sound lame and doesn’t inspire people to pack the theater.

I am always interesting in live action versions, maybe because I like to see how close they can come character design wise. Because, let’s be honest, we would love to have some of our most beloved anime characters living and breathing. Just as much as I like to see my favorite books. They aren’t always perfect, sometimes they aren’t even good, but I think it is a kind of adventure in itself to see how they turn out.

Diamonds in the Sea of Porn

Japan is full of video games. Okay…it’s full of hentai games. Whole stores devoted to the genre of dating games. They pour forth from game studios like liquid money. This just has not caught on in America yet. I wonder why?

Well in Japan’s defense it’s the computer game market that is 90% hentai games. The console game market has all types of games to play. As for why hentai games have not caught on in the US that is a topic for another day.

There are also a plethora of video games based on popular anime series. They aren’t always good and they aren’t even always fun but you have to admit to be at least a little curious.

I think games based on anime are subject to Sturgeon’s Law just like anything else. They also suffer from the fact that like video games based on movies they tend to spit some of them out the door just based on the fact that no matter how bad the game is some people will buy it because you slapped a popular character’s skin over your mediocre game. Then again I’m slightly guilty. I think I would buy anything with Galaxy Angels or One Piece slapped on the cover.

Speaking of Galaxy Angel … I want the Galaxy Angel games. I need the Galaxy Angel games like a Fujoshi needs Yaoi doujinshi. The Galaxy Angel games are a mixture of Dating Sim and Flight Sim that make an Awesome Sim. The first trilogy of games revolves the Moon Angel Troupe and their attempts to protect the Transbaal Empire from a series of threats. During the flight sim part of the game you command the Galaxy Angel’s Emblem Frames (spacecraft) in real time strategy fashion. In-between the fights you can make decisions to decide which of the Galaxy Angel’s you court during the game. The characters are sort of dating game stereotypes but they are all pretty fun. There is also Galaxy Angel II in which you are in charge of the Rune Angel Troupe. There is one game in the Galaxy Angel II series and a second game should be out at the end of the year.

I truly believe that Hisui would kill for the Galaxy Angel games, as long as Hisui could still play them in prison.

Sakura Wars is a similarly type of game. Instead of spacecraft you fight in Steam Punkmecha in the Taisho period. The are 5 games in the main series and a bunch of spin off games. The games are set in an alternate time line where demons threaten the earth and only spiritually powered mecha can effectually fight the demons. The series starts in Japan but moves to Paris and America. The game also has the dating game in between the tactical battles just like in Galaxy Angel. I’m a little less knowledgeable about the Sakura War games than the Galaxy Angel games but they both seem a decent bridge between traditional straight up dating games and action games.

The NANA games. That is right, games…plural! Three to be exact. One for PS2, one for PSP, and the newest one is for Nintendo DS. The PS2 one you are the neighbor of 707 and you have to make friends with the gang. Really nice visuals and what not. This was also the first one to come out. Then there’s the PSP one which I would never be able to get but would be fun! It is all cell-shaded and cute. You can play as any of the characters or make your own. You just go through a game of chance with your life really using a board-game system. Never knowing what will happen day to day. I couldn’t find anything about the DS game but I’m thinking it’s a music game! Part of the title is Live Staff. I would be most interested in that one if that is indeed what it is. It’s a perfect match for the series to keep the band goingand get gigs and do well. Of course all of these games really depend on you knowing the characters and caring about them already. But even if the anime does do well here in the states, I still don’t see these games coming out.

There was a super cool Utena game for the Sega Saturn. It was made with the director of the Utena TV series, Kunihiko Ikuhara. You play as the original character who gets involved with the student council between the Student Council arc and the Black Rose arc (in fact one of the endings causes the main character to start the Black Rose arc). It’s a visual novel so it mostly plays like an animated choose your own adventure (basically a non-romantic dating game). It looks really cool because the animation seems to be on par with the TV show, there are some interesting new characters, and there are even new duel songs. I think the opening sums this game up pretty well.

I actually have this game, but I don’t however have a working Sega Saturn…

Cowoby Bebop: Tsuioku no Yakyoku which was supposedly going to be released in the U.S. but since has disappeared from the radar. Looked great and it was Bebop. Bebop sort of lends itself to having all kinds of adventures written in between. Always bounties to be had that we never saw. This game seems like an actual adventure as opposed to the flight-sim that was released for PS1.

If I remember correctly although it was a pretty game the game play was rather repetitive side-scrolling beatem up.

Slayers also had a few video games that I think might have done well if the came out in the US when Slayers was popular in the US. Slayers Royal 1&2 seem to be visual novels like Utena. They seem like a treat for Slayers fans if for nothing else they have Gourry and Naga finally meet up. These are sort of the lost episodes.

Was always curious about the Record of Lodoss War PC games released in the early 90’s. Obviously, like with most older PC games the graphics and playability aren’t going to stand up to the test of time. However, it would probably still hold the magic of the series with it and I love the nostalgia value of things.

I remember the Record of Lodoss War for the Dreamcast being full of awesome and win for a Diablo clone.

Kekkaishi, can I just say I love this show, for DS and Wii. I might actually import the DS game since I think I could get through it alright. Obviously, you play as a Kekkaishi, Yoshi or Tokine, and you draw boxes and capture ayakashi! As you go on you learn other skills, like the rope, to help you capture more spirit beings. It seems to be a simple game but since its a show I like , I think it could be lots of fun especially the Wii version since you really get to do the movements.

There are rumblings about a Trigun video gamebeing developed. It’s probably playing poker in the back room with the Trigun movie rumblings.

Sounds like Vaporware to me. Prove me wrong Japan. Prove me wrong.

D.Gray Man action/adventure game for the Nintendo DS. You play as Allen and go on missions. You gather information, talk to people, and do a bit of fighting as well. As far I can tell, you don’t get to play as other characters, like Kanda or Krory, but they do show up to help out on missions. This actually has a possibility of getting released, I think, if the anime gets licensed. It is a Shonen Jump title after all.

And speaking of Shonen Jump I would love to play more of the One Piece games. The One Piece game for the Wii seem like a fun little action RPG where you get to switch between Strawhats on the fly during fights. There is talk that this game might come to the US but I have seen nothing definite. One Piece: Gear Spirit seems like a fun little fighting game for the DS. In fact I think I’m going to import this one as I’m writing this. There were also two RPGs for One Piece released for the Gameboy Advanced. These could be fun if they were translated.

Basically it just comes down to more Nami = good.

I also hear that Narutaki maybe likes possibly seeing more Zoro.

Or more Nami and Zoro together!

Speaking of Viz, they have this little ole series called Death Note. No one really likes this series but a few of us. It has two games for the DS. I really am only interested in the first one, Death Note: Kira Gemu. Since the first one is about the first part of the manga and the second is the later half. In it you can either be L or Kira and you are trying to investigate to prove who is L or Kira. As long as I get to be L, the hell with everything else, sounds good to me!

The Ultimate team up of Viz titles would be importing the Jump Super Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars games. They are basically Super Smash Brothersgames with Shonen Jump Characters instead of Nintendo Characters but Super Smash Brothers. But Super Smash Brothers is just super fun no matter what the characters are. Plus you can use Allen Walker and L from Death Note to take down Naruto.

Enix made a Violinist of Hameln game for the SNES. Of course, if I really had my choice this anime would be licensed! Anyway, the game is very strange but sounds fun. You are Hamel who can jump and shoot musical notes but you also have Flute to break through walls, as a stepping stone, or dress her up so she can have special abilities! The graphics are very cute, in the lovely 2D SNES way.

Super Robot Wars is one of those game series that people may really want but will never come over due to licensing issues. Atlas brought over the Original Generation series which was fun but they did not get the main series of SRW. The SRW are turn based strategy games like Final Fantasy Tactics but all the troops are robots from every mecha show from Japan you could ever think of. Want to see Evangelions fighting next to Gundams against the GaoGaiGar and SDF-1 Macross? Well that’s par the course in Super Robot Wars. Plus the games are filled in in-jokes, subtle references, and fan service in a way that would make most mecha otaku weep with joy.

Oh, and in Lovely Complex, Risa plays a dating game which she gets very attached to. I’d totally play that, if for nothing else because her moments in the show are so hilarious. CAIN-SAMA! But there is actually a Love*Com adventure game for PS2 which came out last year. I can’t, however, find out anything about it so it shall remain a mystery. I would so play it though.

No Japanese game list would be complete without at least one henati game. But why stop at one. Type-Moon makes both Tsukihime and Fate Stay/Night. Both games have H content but they are mainly plot heavy so there is an actual story to tell. It’s just a story that has sex in it. There are also a bunch of side story and sequel games to both games.

It’s always intersting to see the range of hentai games. From one button click that literally says “DO IT!” to the barely present sex in Type-Moon games.

Tsukihime is the story of Shiki Tohno a boy who can see the “lines of death” of all things. By tracing these lines he can destroy anything by breaking it on it’s weakest points. He wind up killing a vampire who hunts other vampires named Arcueid Brunestud due to some strange impulse he cannot control. But it turns out that Arcueid is not dead and makes Shiki help her in her in her hunt for vampires. Tsukihime also has a rather cool fighting game based on it called Melty Blood.

Fate/Stay Night is the story of the 5th Holy Grail War. Whoever obtains the grail is granted their hearts desire. Wizards some heroes of the past to fight along side them to determine who shall win the Holy Grail. Shiro Emiya has almost no talent for sorcery but is pulled into the war due to his unknowing involvement as a child in the last Holy Grail War.

In all reality, most of these games won’t ever see the state side. As can be illustrated with certain anime, many Japanese businesses don’t understand that niche games, as a lot of these are, would probably sell under 1000 copies. That totally sucks because I think a lot of these games would hold a place in the hearts of a few and do modestly well.
