Otakon 2013: Let the 20th Anniversary Celebration Begin!

(note: No Ongoing Investigations, Type-Moon Weekly News Round Up, or All Points Bulletin this week.)

20 Years of Otakon? As if it wasn’t exciting enough every year anyway! They’ve pulled out all the stops to bring as many guests as they could pack in. There are also a load of concerts, screenings, and events that aren’t to be missed.

As always, we’ll be covering as much as we can running around the convention center day and night. Do stop us to say hello though! And be sure to attend Alain’s panel on Saturday evening: Kill ’em All and Let Sunrise Sort ’em Out: A Yoshiyuki Tomino Panel.

The Speakeasy #043: The Dark Knight, Comics for Manga Fans

Drink #043: The Dark Knight
Comics for Manga Fans

We’ve often wondered, just what is it that keeps manga fans from reading the wealth of American comics? In this podcast, we along with our guest Ken from Comics Should Be Good! try to figure that out. We also tackle some of the misconceptions about American comics as well as exploring the genres and discussing the comic book store community. In the second half, we recommend a diverse amount of American comics that may appeal to manga fans. Hopefully, you can walk away with at least one title you may give a chance.

And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink:

The Dark Knight

4 oz. Cola
1/2 oz. Homemade Grenadine
Maraschino Cherry Garnish

Build in a highball glass over ice, topping off with grenadine as float. Garnish with maraschino cherry.

Pacific Rim: Sie Sind Das Essen Und Wir Sind Die Jäger!

When Guillermo del Toro does an American super robot movie where huge mecha battle equally huge monsters, a single website cannot cover it effectively. Therefore it takes the combined might of The Cockpit, Ogiue Maniax, and us at the Reverse Thieves to handle the Category 5 Kaiju that is Pacific Rim. While the movie was hardly perfect we generally gush about it while taking apart some of its weaker aspects. The greatest regret is we did not bring up Godannar more in the podcast.

If anyone was curious this Wiki has a fairly good trivia section for each Kaiju in the movie and what classic monster inspired them. If you want to see the inspiration for the Jaeger names, I have to assume it was this.

If nothing else, this is the only Pacific Rim podcast you will listen to with a Natalie Merchant joke in it. So come drift with us.
