Drink #012: New Year Holiday Punch, The Final Fight

Every December Hisui and Narutaki gather round the fireplace in the stately Tohno Mansion and open a bottle of L’Esprit de Courvoisier and a box of Montecristo Robustos Millenium after indulging in a 12-course banquet to offer some relief from the cold weather outside. During this time the two luminaries discuss events of the past and plans for the year ahead. This is a recording of their fireside chat in which they discuss the events that have shaped the anime and manga fandom over the course of 2010 including changes in the industry and fandom. They also muse about the future, and mourn the loss of those artists who changed the medium forever. Let us all toast the passing of 2010 and usher in a better 2011.

Drink #011: Absinthe Minded, Under the Influence of Gainax

The new season chart comes out and anime fans rush to blogs, forums, twitter, IRC, clubs, and anywhere and everywhere else otaku go to discuss their hobbies. They talk about what shows will be horrible and which shows hopefully meet their expectations. But it seems that no matter what they make, everyone will always discuss one studio and oddly enough usually in glowing terms. This studio is Gainax. Why does Gainax get this free pass from a fandom known for bitterness and pessimism? Does Gainax deserve this lofty status? Also why does everyone forget they made He Is My Master? Are they repressing painful memories?

The Speakeasy: A Reverse Thieves Podcast – Drink #010

Anime 3000 presents The Speakeasy Podcast:
Drink #010:
The Red Comet, Romance in the various Gundam Universes

When you think of Gundam you usually think of a mixture of real robot battles and politics as the foundation of the various series that make up the franchise. But the relationships between the characters is an equally important part that is easily overlooked because of all the cool robot fights. High on the list of debate are the romantic relationships; some are praised as highly realistic and touching, others are viewed as melodramatic but engaging, while still others are seen as travesties. The problem is that few fans agree which relationships from which show go in which category. In this episode we will examine the relationships that stand out the most in our minds from all the Gundam series we have seen. We start with the works of Tomino and go up to the present with Gundam Unicorn and Gundam 00.
