All Points Bulletin: Steak, Rattle, & Roll

If you have any suggestions for what to highlight on an APB drop us a line via email or Twitter.

Narutaki’s picks:

  • I Need All of This New Disney/Star Wars Merchandise
Especially the pins. Okay, mostly the pins. They do this every year so it isn’t a surprise but I look forward to the even greater mountains of stuff coming out thanks to the merger.
  • Like I Needed More Reasons to go to Steak ‘n Shake?
Okay, I totally couldn’t eat that 7-patty burger but I want it anyway. The Steakburger Slinger sounds the most enticing though since it is breakfast combined with steakburgers!
  • Let’s Hear It for the Villains
DC announced a new documentary about their rogues gallery. I love geekery documentaries and we’ve had a high supply of them in recent years. I’m kind of surprised they aren’t featuring their heroes first, unless I missed it? And can we expect similar from Marvel in the near future? Especially with Marvel’s powerhouse movie sales of late.

Hisui’s picks:

It isn’t a villain line-up without The Joker! Also this artist has a pretty sweet Batman/Spawn piece, too.

Type-Moon Weekly News Roundup: The Epic of Gilgamesh

This Saturday post is the weekly Type-Moon news in addition to the regular APB post on Sunday. If you have any suggestions for what to highlight on the Type-Moon Weekly News Roundup drop me a line via email or Twitter.

  • I Actually Know the Answer to That
The answer is anyone whose legend prominently has them using a bow at some point can be summoned as an Archer. Gilgamesh has the Bow of Anshan and they make a big deal of Shiro being a part of the Archery club for a reason. I mean technically Arturia Pendragon can be summoned as a Lancer due to her ownership of Rhongowennan but that would be weird.
But me being a Type-Moon nerd aside here are some wonderful screen shots of the upcoming Chogokin Archer to complement the Chogokin Saber review I linked to last week. You can preorder him starting April 3rd.
  • The Voice of a New Generation
The voices from the new Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya anime have been revealed. They seem to be the same cast from the Prisma Illya drama CDs. They also released the first two teasers if you want to see that.
  • Time Cast a Spell on You. But You Won’t Forget Me.
It seems that the fox eared Caster finally gets her own manga series in Comp Ace that is tentatively called Fate/Extra Yōko-den. I like they are breaking her out a bit like Red Saber. Hopefully all of them will start hopping over to more Type-Moon projects.
  • A White Wedding in Valhalla
The makers of Valhalla Knights 3 announced that Fate Extra’s Saber’s wedding dress outfit will be a free downloadable outfit when the game is released.
  • Gimme The Prize
What an apropos song for Fate/Zero. But this headline is heralding new prize figures for Fate/Zero and not a Queen version of the soundtrack for the TV series.
  • Fate/Extra CCC Roundup
It is a Roundup inception! A roundup in a roundup that in itself was spun off of the main news roundup! I half expect Leonardo DiCaprio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to pop up.

    • “Service, Service” as Misato Would Say
A little video about the costume change options came out for Fate/Extra CCC before the laugh this week. There is a distinct focus made on the racy outfits for the female characters. Sadly the guys don’t get to show off their goods so we don’t have Gilgamesh in a swim trunks. I am sure someone is slight disappointed about that.
    • CCC Fight Club
The first rule of CCC Fight Club is you post all the videos you can about CCC Fight Club. And in that spirit the new auto battle feature is being shown off in this Fate/Extra CCC video.
    • A Room of One’s Own
Another part of Fate/Extra that got a make over was the customization of your private room. This latest video shows some of what you can do now to make your digs stylish.
    • Last Hurrah for Chivalry
Just before Fate/Extra CCC comes out they have released an almost 21 minute video showing some large chucks of game play as well as highlighting some of the features mentioned in other videos. Definitely a video that has much more value in if you understand Japanese.
    • Playing Doctor
As with Fate/Extra they added some sexy mini-games to the webpage to celebrate the release of Fate/Extra CCC. In the game you have to nurse Red Saber back to health after she falls ill.
    • Golden Dreams
For the ladies they also made a game on the website with the King of Heroes

Ongoing Investigations: Case #208

narutaki Sweet Blue Flowers is a show I caught the first episode of and then put in the “I’ll finish this sometime” pile. Luckily, Right Stuf pushed me into it by sending us a copy! I’m very grateful.

Sweet Blue Flowers is about two childhood friends who reconnect again when Fumi moves back to town. They are attending different high schools but make sure to meet up for their shared commute. Each make and share friends as their all-girl schools team up to perform a play. Akira is carefree while Fumi is more introverted as she begins to deal with her feelings for another girl at school.

More than anything, I was drawn in by Akira and Fumi’s friendship. It is really rare in anime to see a character “come out” to a friend, worry about being judged, and then finding understanding and acceptance on the other side; it just isn’t dealt with at all usually. Whether this honest and tender friendship ever develops into more will be left in the hands on the manga.

I love Akira, she is a great friend and has an infectious joy about her. There were a lot of wonderful moments of her supporting those around her with an ease, it just comes natural to her. She is also hilarious and has great expressions. I felt a kinship with her which solidified the characterization of this show.

This is from the creator of Wandering Son which feels very close to Sweet Blue Flowers in its ability to handle complicated issues of sexuality and the growing pains of youth while featuring how the bonds of friendship pull you through.

Sweet Blue Flowers is an unusual animal in the menagerie that is manga about girls falling in love. You tend to think of yuri manga as the equal and opposite of yaoi manga. A genre about homosexuals mostly for the titillation of heterosexuals of the opposite gender with little grounding in real relationships. But both genres have titles that deal with said relationships in a realistic fashion. The original Sweet Blue Flowers manga is by Takako Shimura who also writes Wandering Son. That makes sense as Wandering Son takes the topic of transvestism and gender identity and makes them real subjects for drama and not fetishes. She does the same with lesbians with Sweet Blue Flowers.

I think one of the most interesting things about Sweet Blue Flowers is that while Fumi’s sexual orientation is fairly clear on the Kinsey scale we don’t really get a good sense of where Akira’s preferences lie. In a show were we delve so deeply into the sexuality of the principal characters I think that Akira’s lack of examination is notable. Even when Akira goes on the group date she seems far more interested in it as a nonsexual social interaction than as an opportunity to find someone to date.

I think it would be easy to assume that Akira exists as a blank slate that solely exists to validate and support the fragile Fumi. But see a good deal of depth and nuance to her character outside of her interactions with Fumi so it is not like she is just a device and not a person. I feel that in that sense this has to have been done for a deliberate reason. Considering that the manga is still ongoing I wonder if this is a topic that is be saved for later examination.

That observation aside I think that anyone interested in a romantic drama with something beyond the standard boy meets girl story there is a good deal of material to sink your teeth into. There is heartbreak, drama, self-examination, and tender love. But there is also genuine and uncomplicated friendship with humor and fun. Sweet Blue Flowers is also just able to explore a good deal of issues outside of the normal romantic fare by stepping outside of the standard mold.

As a side note Reverse Thieves favorite Kunihiko Ikuhara was the unit director for the opening. That alone should make it worth checking out.

The Ongoing Investigations are little peeks into what we are watching and reading outside of our main posts on the blog. We each pick three things that we were interested in a week and talk a bit about them. There is often not much rhyme or reason to what we pick. They are just the most interesting things we saw since the last Ongoing Investigation.
