Crime Scene Investigations #001: Genericon 2011

Anime 3000 presents The Speakeasy Podcast
Crime Scene Investigations #001: Genericon 2011

This is the first bonus segment of the Speakeasy Podcast we like to call Crime Scene Investigations. These are random bonus podcasts that we record live from various events. There is no regular schedule for these. We will put them up as quickly as we can when the opportunity for one of these occurs. We suspect they will mostly be from conventions but we might work in some interviews and conversation from NY events as fate allows.

Theoretically, this is a podcast were we talk about our experiences at Genericon 2011 with Clarissa, Daryl, and Gerald of Anime World Order. Theoretically. In practice, this is more of an conversation about conventions in which Genericon comes up once or twice. Evan from the Ani-Gamers tries his to do his job as Genericon PR coordinator but soon all semblance of structure gives way and the conversation just becomes about Kevin Sorbo, red neck Mandalorians, and the grooming habits of Gamestop employees.

Genericon 2011

My first Genericon was also my first college convention and by far the smallest con I have ever attended with a head count of 1351. We were also doing two new panels as well as being touted as featured panelists. And to top it all off many familiar faces were in attendance. All of these factors, plus some great people involved, ended up making it a worthwhile and memorable weekend.

hisuiconNow that I was a featured panelist and have made it to the big times I will try to remember all the little people who helped me get here because that makes it easier for me to make sure they cannot call me. But it all seriousness I was greatly honored to be invited as a featured panelist at Genericon this year. I think along with our fellows guests we were able to bring some amazing presentations to an already traditionally well run college convention. We got to see the Most Dangerous AWO Crew, the stealthy The Ninja Consultants, the professional animators from For Tax Reasons, the harried Evan Minto, and the luminary Ed Chavez. It was a great opportunity to reunite with some old friends from the anime community, sit down at some wonderful panels, eat some great meals, meet some new people, meet the young chap who won the Dirty Pair Box set, and have a great time.

We’re The No-Brand Heroes: Genericon XXIV Plans

I would once again like to pimp the fact that we will be featured panelists this weekend at Genericon 2011 at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. I feel very privileged that we were asked to present panels due in part to our good friend Evan Minto. We will be talking alongside the AWO crew, the Ninja Consultants, Ed Chavez, and many more stellar and experienced speakers so there should be an overwhelmingly good set of panels this weekend. If you have the chance I hope to see a few of our readers at our panels or wandering around the convention. I know I will be wearing my newly obtained Fate/Zero shirt with Saber and Irisviel on Saturday if nothing else identifies me other than my “unique” voice.

This will be my first time attending a college convention, surprising as that may be. I really have no idea what to expect which makes it rather exciting. Genericon is filled with a lot of people I’ve become close acquaintances with over the last couple of years so that pretty much assures a lot of good content panel-wise and a lot of good conversations personal-wise. We are debuting some new panels at Genericon (so wish us luck!) and hope to expand our offerings for more cons this season as well. And with our new mixer intoe we should be doing some recordings over the weekend as well.
