The idea for starting a game of Dungeons & Dragons sprung forth while a couple of friends were in town for New York Comic Con. And since it was during NYCC, it is easy for me to remember when it all happened.
As we were rolling along on the train headed to geek paradise, the subject of wanting to play D&D, but never really having the chance, occurred. We also talked about not having enough friends around to play with, but now with Google+ Hangouts and the like it might work. And then one very important moment, when my friends agreed that it was really hard to find a great dungeon master (and a DM that actually wanted to be the DM instead of play), made things click. I recalled and shared with my friends that Hisui ran a ton of campaigns in college, not D&D but other roleplaying worlds, so it was decided I would inquire about the possibilities.
Obviously, since I’m writing this, Hisui was in.
Then came some serious planning on the backend to get the whole thing rolling. I won’t regale you with the minute details, suffice to say e-mails were sent; online meetings were held; we added a few more people to the party; and crazy amounts of world building and character creation took up the months leading to the game start date. I found myself embroiled in my backstory, taking it further than I would have imagined, and I made a map of the “known” world somewhere in between it all.
Now, here we are, finally, on the cusp of our grand tale! Five adventurers setting off into the world of Atman.
So, why blog about it?
Honestly, I wasn’t planning it from the get-go. As Hisui and I started mentioning it here and there on Twitter, we got a number of responses. People suggested blogging it and seemed interested in hearing how the game goes so here we are. I’ll be taking on the newbie angle as I learn and observe the process and play out my story. Don’t expect me to know terms, rules, or other roleplaying games because I don’t. I am well and truly new to this world. Hisui’s posts will be tackling things as our trusty dungeon master.
We’ll be playing bi-weekly starting on January 12th, but I can’t say for sure what the schedule of these posts will be until that first session gets underway.
We’ve covered all kinds of topics on Reverse Thieves, though never on this scale. Still, it isn’t outside the mission statement of the blog that we’ll tackle whatever strikes us.
So please come along on this adventure with me as I add another notch to my geek belt.
