There is a hole in the heart of New York City otaku; we miss having an annual anime convention. NYC seems like the ideal place: a hub of international travel, a great public transportation system, plenty of places to stay, and so much to do in general. Several people have tried to grow an anime convention in the City That Never Sleeps. The Big Apple Anime Fest and New York Anime Festival were both valiant efforts to take advantage of the location but neither of them lasted more than a few years.

Waku Waku NYC is the newest attempt to try again and we’re really excited! This time, it is happening in Brooklyn. And the focus is on Japanese culture in addition to anime and manga.

Waku Waku’s most eye-catching guests (for us anyway) are Takao Koyama, Makoto Koyama, and Keiji Inafune. Takao Koyama and Makoto Koyama have both written from various iterations of Dragon Ball Z. As Dragon Ball is undoubtedly the most evergreen of all anime franchises, they are no small draw. Keiji Inafune is one of the integral forces behind Mega Man. His current work on Mighty No. 9 and Red Ash have recently made him a constant focus of attention.

True anime otaku should take note of  a couple screenings over the weekend: Chibi Maruko Chan 1000th Episode Special and Sanrio’s The Nutcracker. Plus, Dragon Ball Z movies Tree of Might and Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan screenings with the Koyama’s. There is also more interactive fare like Real Escape Game: 1000 Treasure Hunters (don your detective hats!) and a playable demo of Mighty No. 9.

Finally, and maybe best of all, Waku Waku is taking advantage of NYC’s rich food culture by having a slew of Japanese food stalls with everything from curry and ramen to matcha tea and taiyaki. You can spend the whole day at the convention and never worry about going hungry!

Can Waku Waku NYC grow roots in New York City unlike its predecessors?
