The Speakeasy #042: The Sailor Moon, Some of Our Favorite Magical Girls

Drink #042: Sailor Moon
Some of Our Favorite Magical Girls

The problem with the magical girl genre in America is that there haven’t been a lot of titles to hit the states so you think you know the tropes but do you really? While we are hardly scholars on the subject, we try to at least contextualize maho shojo outside of just being Sailor MoonMagical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. We also talk a bit about our favorite titles.

But before we get to what we talk a bit about the Cosplay is Not Consent movement and the bizzaro backlash against it.

Crime Scene Investigations #005: AnimeNEXT 2013

This is a bonus segment of the Speakeasy Podcast we like to call Crime Scene Investigations. These are random bonus podcasts that we record live from various events. There is no regular schedule for these. We will put them up as quickly as we can when the opportunity for one occurs. We suspect they will mostly be from conventions but we might work in some interviews and conversation from NY events as fate allows.

The great Robeast that was AnimeNEXT 2013 could not be slain by a single podcasting mecha. It required the effort of an elite team of podcasters in combining lions to handle an event like this in the forsaken land of New Jersey. Evan and Ink from the Ani-Gamers podcast formed the legs. Vincenzo and Vince who were not only staff but also are part of the All Geeks Considered podcast formed the arms. And Xan from the Spiraken Manga Review formed the head. That makes me, Hisui, the Blazing Sword that let the team snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

If you want my written impression of AnimeNEXT you can find the main article here. The other reports from our illustrious pilots as well as the full story of harassment as a cosplayer are linked in this post.

Crime Scene Investigations #005: AnimeNEXT 2013

The Fourth Brethren of the Coast Podcast

One of the oldest conflicts in anime fandom is the fact that fansubs helped spread the popularity of anime in the early days of the hobby. And to that point how relevant are fansubs to an industry where 90% of everything is simulcast in English and classic series are being license recused all the time?  Are there still titles that can be ethically fansubbed? Or is watching any show just dirty piracy?

Sean Russell from Anime 3000 gathered together Sean Ryan from Alpha Counter as well as both Reverse Thieves to discuss the remaining times where watching less than official subs may still be a grey area.
