Letters from Atman: My First D&D Campaign Pt. 1

narutaki Before this series of posts truly begins, an introduction is in order.

The idea for starting a game of Dungeons & Dragons sprung forth while a couple of friends were in town for New York Comic Con. And since it was during NYCC, it is easy for me to remember when it all happened.

As we were rolling along on the train headed to geek paradise, the subject of wanting to play D&D, but never really having the chance, occurred. We also talked about not having enough friends around to play with, but now with Google+ Hangouts and the like it might work. And then one very important moment, when my friends agreed that it was really hard to find a great dungeon master (and a DM that actually wanted to be the DM instead of play), made things click. I recalled and shared with my friends that Hisui ran a ton of campaigns in college, not D&D but other roleplaying worlds, so it was decided I would inquire about the possibilities.

Obviously, since I’m writing this, Hisui was in.

S.W.A.T. Reviews: Winter 2013 Pt. 1

The premise of these reviews is simple: watch the first episode of a series and then immediately sit down to record a review mini-podcast. The reviews are five- to ten-minutes long and entirely off the cuff. As always we only review new shows (so no sequels or continuations) and try to avoid anything that just looks outright awful. These are the first seven of the new season:

Narutaki’s picks:

  • An In-Depth Look at the Newspapers of Back to the Future
Another great article that looks way too closely into a minor piece of trivia, this time the Back to the Future franchise is the target. I love when people note details like this.
  • Superhero a Day
A great project that has produced some super cool art from one Pixar artist.
  • Is 48FPS the Next Step?
There has been a lot of debate about 48FPS thanks to The Hobbit, I saw it in 24 FYI, but this article does a nice job of rounding up the arguments and making a few things clear like the technology limitations and how the human eye works among other things. I still don’t know where I stand but I can’t totally rule out that I might just “get used to it” eventually. But I’ve yet to really grasp, despite explanations, what advantage it gives filmmakers.
  • Can’t Keep Kuroko Down!
I was really happy to see Shonen Jump celebrating Kuroko’s Basketball despite all the insane threats surrounding it of late. A new wallpaper is released daily, and only available that day, and I missed the first couple sadly. And as the article states, the manga will got a special 19-page color chapter.

Hisui’s picks:

Looking forward to another season of Kuroko!
