New York Comic Con 2013: General Impressions

hisui_icon_4040 This year’s New York Comic Con felt a little more manageable. Last year felt like it was a convention cosplaying as scene from Soylent Green. This year was decidedly busy but not as overwhelming. You could conceivably go on to the show floor on Saturday afternoon and go from one end to the other in less than an hour without the offensive line of an NFL team escorting you. At the same time the content still seemed strong, the business in the showroom and artist alley seemed brisk, and major panels were still hard to go into. So the real question is why was this. How did the convention grow but everything seem less crowded?

narutaki_icon_4040 New York Comic Con is something I’m always anticipating; it probably helps that NYCC staff hype the show and make announcements for months before it is really on the convention radar. This year I had a bit of anxiety mixed-in since the 2012 convention was huge and packed, I was wondering what this year would hold. Would it be more crowded? Would I be able to get to the panels I wanted? What are the limits of the Javits space?

And the ultimate question for me: would NYCC be so big that I no longer enjoyed it? That was weighing on me like never before. And maybe because I was thinking about that so much, this year’s NYCC was able to pleasantly surprise me.

New York Comic Con 2013: Our 7 Favorite Announcements

Anything and Everything Attack on Titan

Unsurprisingly it seems that any and every Attack on Titan title in existence was picked up after the success of the anime. The true Attack on Titan frenzy is not shown with the pick up of the guidebooks, the comedy high school parody manga, the prequel manga, or the Levi spin-off manga that only currently has one chapter. No, the true testament to the phenomenon is that the light novel was licensed. But if there is any company that could make a light novel release work it is Vertical. We’ll see which of these titles succeed, by how much, and how much a rising tide lifts all boats in general.

Also you couldn’t turn around at NYCC without running into at least ten people cosplaying from the series.

New York Comic Con 2013: Podcasts

Normally with con coverage we start with our tweets from over the weekend. But with the sheer amount of human beings in the Jacob K. Javits Center it was hard for either of us to tweet with any regularity. Since New York Comic Con ends a bit earlier than your average anime convention, we decided to try recording some podcasts everyday after the convention. Each day Patz from The Cockpit podcast, and a mysterious person better known Alain’s roommate, joined us to talk about the day’s events.

These are distinctly a bit raw and unedited but they are also totally fresh off the convention floor feelings that will hopefully give you a bit of different perspective on the convention.

(Sorry these are only available on YouTube. Our Libsyn is all filled up with S.W.A.T. Reviews!)
