This is a bonus segment of the Speakeasy Podcast we like to call Crime Scene Investigations. These are random bonus podcasts that we record live from various events. There is no regular schedule for these. We will put them up as quickly as we can when the opportunity for one occurs. We suspect they will mostly be from conventions but we might work in some interviews and conversation from NY events as fate allows.
Otakon is far bigger a convention than a simple grouping of categories can provide. We do our best with the general impressions, guests, panels, and other assorted columns but certain experiences get caught outside the confines of such a system. So Patz from Insert-Disc joins us to talk about the flavor and details of Otakon that might have not comes across in our convention reports. Also everyone shares their strangest stories, favorite moments, and gripes as well as pieces of praise. This is a bright send off to another great year of Otakon as we look forward to the big bash that will be the 20th anniversary in 2013!

I hope to meet that chill robot artist man someday.
He was pretty relaxed and fairly talkative. Hopefully he will come to con in the future. You would probably get some interesting answers from him.

Long time, first time.
As far as getting Kids On the Slope badges. I suspect the big reason is that they needed to get the mangaka’s permission for such artwork and that’s a lot of hoops to jump through. It also means that a Sentai 23 rep would have to come out of hiding and do more than just issue press releases. Possible, but highly unlikely.
Well as we all know Sentai 23 representatives are all secret agents that must commit suicide via cyanide capsule implanted in their teeth (Not one tooth. All of them) if:
A. They are ever seen in public and identified as a Sentai 23 representative.
B. They are ever in the same room with another Sentai 23 representative.
C. Anyone brings up ADV Toys (especially the Excel Saga Grilln’ Menchi with Tabletop BBQ)
D. If you properly pronounce PiQ
So as you can guess these rules make them try to stay as close to the ground as possible. Getting a mangaka’s permission is practically asking them to kill themselves.

your strangest stories were surprisingly tame. I feel like I was at a completely different convention!
Also, the secret to getting to the front of the Gen Urobuchi autograph line was to carry a large flag pole to push people aside with. If my prayers are heard and Kinoko Nasu and/or Takashi Takeuchi are guest next year I plan to upgrade to something sturdier.

SOOOO …. What was your strangest moment at Otakon? Or has the statute of limitations not run out on any debauchery you may have witnessed and/or participated in?
I mean when you say something like that it clearly means you want someone to ask for your story.
